Chapter 5 - The Fortress of New York

The Moretti estate in Long Island was a fortress. Situated on thirty acres of prime waterfront property, it was surrounded by a twelve-foot stone wall topped with security cameras, motion sensors, and manned guard towers. For the first time in fifteen months, Lauren woke up in a bed that didn't creak, wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets, with the morning sun streaming through massive arched windows.

But she wasn't free.

It had been three weeks since the night in Boston. Luca had fully recovered, his cheeks chubby and rosy again, his laughter filling the grand hallways of the mansion as he learned to crawl on the priceless Persian rugs. Giovanni had spared no expense; an entire wing of the house had been converted into a state-of-the-art nursery, filled with every toy, book, and clothing item a child could ever need. A private pediatrician visited twice a week.

Giovanni was a man possessed. He worked from the estate now, rarely traveling to the city. Every spare moment he had was spent with Luca. Lauren would watch from the doorway as the terrifying Mafia King sat on the floor in his expensive suits, letting the baby pull his silk ties, patiently teaching him how to stack wooden blocks, or rocking him to sleep in the dark hours of the night when Luca woke up teething.

The bond between them had grown with terrifying speed. Luca worshipped his father, his little face lighting up with absolute joy every time Giovanni walked into the room.

But between Giovanni and Lauren, the tension was a living thing, thick and suffocating. They were living as husband and wife in name, sharing the master suite, but sleeping on opposite sides of a vast, invisible chasm.

One evening, after Luca had been put to bed, Lauren stood on the rear stone terrace, looking out over the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The autumn air was crisp, and she wrapped a cashmere shawl tightly around her shoulders.

"You're thinking about running again," a deep voice said from the shadows.

Giovanni stepped out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of red wine. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing against hers, sending a jolt of familiar, electric heat through her veins.

"I can't run from a fortress, Giovanni," Lauren said softly, taking a sip of the rich wine. "There are guards at every gate. I don't even have my own passport anymore."

"Good," Giovanni said, leaning against the stone balustrade beside her. "The Valenti family has placed a bounty on my head, and by extension, on Luca. My intelligence reports say they are desperate. They lost three turf wars in Manhattan this month, and they know their time is running out. They want a spectacular hit to prove they are still relevant."

Lauren looked up at him, her heart aching. Under the moonlight, she could see the profound exhaustion in his eyes. He was fighting a multi-front war to protect his empire, but more importantly, to protect the nursery on the second floor.

"Is it always going to be like this?" she asked, her voice cracking. "Are we always going to be prisoners of your name?"

Giovanni turned to face her, his gaze intense, capturing her eyes in the darkness. "No. I am ending it, Lauren. The Commission has called a sit-down for tomorrow night in Brooklyn. All the five families will be there. Don Valenti will be there. I am going to end this feud once and for all."

Panic flared in Lauren’s chest. She reached out, her hand instinctively coming to rest on his chest, feeling the heavy, steady beat of his heart beneath his shirt. "A sit-down? Giovanni, that’s a trap. You know the Valentis don't respect the rules anymore. They’ll kill you."

Giovanni looked down at her hand on his chest. A sudden, raw vulnerability cracked through his hardened exterior. He reached up, covering her small hand with his large one, pressing it deeper against his heart.

"Are you worried about me, Lauren? Or are you just worried about losing your protection?"

"Don't be an idiot," she whispered, tears springing to her eyes. "Of course I’re worried about you. I never stopped loving you, Giovanni. I ran because I loved you too much to watch you die, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing our child to this darkness. If anything happens to you..."

May you like

Before she could finish, Giovanni’s hand cupped the back of her neck, pulling her forward into a fierce, desperate kiss. It was a kiss born of fifteen months of agony, longing, and fear. Lauren gasped against his lips, her arms wrapping around his neck as she surrendered to the familiar, intoxicating storm of his touch. He held her as if she were the only anchor keeping him anchored to the earth, his lips moving against hers with a possessive, fierce tenderness that left them both breathless.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his breathing ragged. "I will come back to you, Lauren," he swore against her lips. "I have a son to raise now. And I have a wife to win back. I will wipe the Valentis off the face of this earth before I let them take this away from me."
