Chapter 7 - The Ghost of the Past

Two weeks passed with a serenity that Pinecrest Heights had not experienced in generations.

Baby Dexter was thriving, growing stronger and more alert by the day under the doting care of Mrs. Mabel and Charlee, who treated her role as big sister with absolute solemnity. Florence Miller was recovering remarkably well in the north wing, her sharp wit returning as she spent her afternoons telling Charlee stories about the old days—though she carefully edited out the darker parts of Arthur Warren’s cruelty to protect the little girl's innocent heart.

Spencer found himself slipping into a routine he never could have imagined possible for himself. He traded late-night corporate board meetings for bedtime stories about dragons and space explorers, reading to Charlee in the grand library while baby Dexter slept in a basket nearby.

Yet, a lingering puzzle remained.

Late one evening, after Charlee had fallen asleep and Florence had retired for the night, Spencer sat alone in his private study. He unlocked the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk and pulled out an old, leather-bound diary that had belonged to his mother, Eleanor Warren, who had passed away when he was only ten years old.

He turned the brittle, yellowed pages, searching for any mention of the family secrets Florence had hinted at. Near the back of the journal, a folded letter slipped out and fluttered to the floor.

Spencer picked it up. The handwriting was his mother’s elegant, sweeping cursive.

“My dearest Spencer, if you are reading this, it means I am gone, and Arthur has continued his reign of terror unchecked. You must know the truth about why I distanced myself from you before the end. Arthur kept a second set of records—a ledger of his hidden assets and children born outside his marriage—kept inside the wall safe of the old family summer chalet in Lake Geneva. If the truth ever comes to light, you must go there. Protect the innocent, my son. Do not let our family name be defined by his sins.”

Spencer stared at the letter, his heart pounding. A summer chalet in Lake Geneva—a property he had completely forgotten existed, buried deep within Swiss corporate holdings that had been dormant for decades.

The next morning, Spencer called an emergency meeting with Jonathan Drake and Detective Vance.

"We are flying to Switzerland," Spencer announced, laying his mother's letter on the desk. "There is a chalet in Lake Geneva registered under an old shell corporation. My father kept his true financial and personal records hidden there. If Jocelyn had accomplices we haven't found yet, their names will be in that safe."

"Switzerland?" Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Warren, that's international territory. Accessing those archives could take weeks of diplomatic clearance."

"We aren't going through diplomatic channels," Spencer said coldly. "We're going on my private jet. And we're leaving in two hours."

Before departing, Spencer walked into the north wing to say goodbye to Florence and Charlee. Charlee was busy feeding Dexter a bottle with Mrs. Mabel supervising.

When Charlee saw Spencer in his tailored travel suit, her face fell. "Are you going away, Mr. Spencer?"

Spencer knelt down, resting his hands gently on her shoulders. "Just for a few days, Charlee. I have to settle some old business overseas to make sure our family is safe forever. While I'm gone, Mrs. Mabel and Detective Vance's security detail will protect this house like a fortress. Do you trust me?"

Charlee nodded solemnly, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I trust you. Just... come back safe with your smile."

Spencer kissed the top of her head, stood up, and walked out the door. He had no idea that the journey to Lake Geneva would uncover a secret so massive, it would completely redefine everything he thought he knew about his own birth.
