Chapter 5 - The Serpent in the Library

"Mabel! Drop the baby!" Jocelyn Cooper screamed, her voice echoing through the intercom speakers connected to the library feed.

On the screen, Mrs. Mabel stood frozen, her eyes wide with terror as the cold black barrel of the silenced pistol pressed against her temple. Baby Dexter began to whimper, sensing the sudden spike of fear in the room.

Beside Spencer, Charlee let out a sharp gasp and buried her face against his leg. "Mister Spencer! Save them!"

Spencer didn't blink. He turned his cold gaze back onto Viktor, who was now backed against the basement wall, his facade completely shattered. The veteran security chief reached slowly toward his hip holster, but Spencer was faster. With terrifying precision, Spencer lunged forward, slamming Viktor’s arm against the stone wall and sending a heavy-duty tactical stun baton clattering to the floor.

"You miserable snake," Spencer hissed, pressing his forearm against Viktor’s throat. "How much did she pay you?"

"It... it wasn't about money!" Viktor choked out, his face turning purple. "Arthur... your father... he had files on all of us! Jocelyn has the original ledger! If we didn't help her reclaim the estate, she would have destroyed us!"

Spencer shoved Viktor away with such force that the older man collapsed into a heap of groaning limbs. "There is no estate left for her to claim," Spencer said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "It belongs to me."

He turned and sprinted toward the service stairs, taking them three at a time, bursting into the grand library just as Jocelyn was backing toward the French doors leading out to the gardens.

"Don't move, Jocelyn," Spencer ordered, his voice cutting through the sprawling room like a razor.

Jocelyn spun around, her blonde hair wild, her eyes dilated with manic desperation. She kept the pistol firmly pressed against Mrs. Mabel’s neck, while baby Dexter squirmed in the housekeeper's trembling arms.

"Stay back, Spencer!" Jocelyn shrieked, her voice cracking. "You ruined my life! You promised me a future twelve years ago before you locked yourself away in your corporate fortress! You left me with nothing!"

"I never promised you anything, Jocelyn," Spencer replied, stepping forward with deliberate, terrifying slowness. "You were a distant cousin who tried to manipulate my assets. When I cut you off, you stole my frozen genetic samples to trap me. And when that failed, you tried to murder an innocent newborn by throwing him into a garbage bag."

"He was supposed to be our ticket!" Jocelyn cried, tears streaming down her powdered cheeks. "With your son as the legal heir, I would have controlled the entire trust fund! But that little rat"—she glared down at Charlee, who had crept into the library behind Spencer—"found him! That homeless street urchin ruined everything!"

Charlee stepped out from behind Spencer’s shadow, her eyes blazing with a courage that defied her seven years of age.

"You're a bad person," Charlee said clearly, her voice ringing out in the silent room. "You don't deserve to be a mother. My grandma told me about you. You're just a greedy thief."

Jocelyn’s face twisted in rage. Her finger tightened on the trigger of the pistol. "I'll kill you all right here and now—!"

Before Jocelyn could pull the trigger, a heavy leather-bound volume flew through the air from the upper balcony, striking her wrist with a sickening crack. The pistol flew from her hand, skittering across the polished hardwood floor.

At the exact same second, Detective Vance and three armed tactical officers burst through the main library doors, swarming Jocelyn and slamming her face-first onto the Persian rug.

"Jocelyn Cooper, you are under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, and corporate extortion," Detective Vance announced, snapping the steel cuffs onto her wrists.

Mrs. Mabel collapsed into a velvet armchair, sobbing tears of relief as she cradled baby Dexter safely against her chest. Charlee ran over, gently stroking the baby's tiny hand.

Spencer walked over, picking up the fallen pistol and tossing it to an officer. He looked down at Jocelyn as she was dragged away, her screams of denial echoing out into the stormy night.

The immediate threat was neutralized, but as Spencer looked around his ancestral home, he knew the true battle for his family’s soul was only just beginning.
