Chapter 8 - The Cornerstone Gala

Six months after the fateful wedding day that never happened, the Cross Estate hosted an event unlike any in its history.
Instead of elite socialites and corporate executives networking in hushed tones, the grand ballroom was filled with frontline hospitality workers, community organizers, families from the St. Jude survivor fund, and staff members from all twelve Cross Hospitality hotels across the country.
At the center of the dais stood a newly unveiled bronze plaque dedicated to the victims of the St. Jude fire and the triumph of workplace transparency and safety.
Nathaniel Cross stood at the podium, adjusting the microphone as the room quieted down. His tuxedo was immaculate, but his posture was relaxed, stripped of the corporate armor he used to wear like a second skin.
"When we build hotels," Nathaniel began, his voice echoing clearly across the grand hall, "we obsess over architectural integrity. We test the steel, we inspect the wiring, and we reinforce the foundations so they can withstand any storm."
He paused, looking out over the sea of attentive faces—spotting Carol in the front row, holding little Ivy on her lap, and Rebecca smiling warmly from the side table.
"For too long, I believed that luxury was defined by marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and pristine appearances," Nathaniel continued. "I was wrong. True luxury—true leadership—begins with the safety, dignity, and voice of every single person who steps inside our doors. A house is only as strong as the care we show to those who keep it standing."
Applause erupted across the ballroom, starting gently and swelling into a roaring standing ovation. People smiled, wiped away tears, and nodded in profound agreement.
Carol held Ivy’s small hand up high so the little girl could wave at Nathaniel on the stage. Ivy beamed, her eyes sparkling with innocent joy.
After the speech, as the orchestra struck up a lively waltz and guests moved toward the banquet tables, Nathaniel stepped down from the dais and walked over to Carol and Ivy.
"Well, Head of Operations," Nathaniel said with a warm smile, crouching down to Ivy's eye level. "How did the staff handle tonight's gala?"
"Flawlessly, Mr. Nathaniel," Carol answered, her face radiant with happiness. "Not a single detail was missed."

Ivy leaned forward and gave Nathaniel a sudden, tight hug around the neck. "You're a very good helper, Mr. Nathaniel," she whispered solemnly.
Nathaniel wrapped his arms around the little girl, feeling a profound sense of peace and belonging that he had never known before.
