Chapter 3 - The Unraveling in the Garden

The three hundred guests seated beneath the white silk marquee murmured as Nathaniel stepped out from the side path.
Music drifted from the string quartet, playing a gentle prelude that felt agonizingly out of place. Vanessa turned toward him, her lips parting in a radiant, practiced smile. She took two steps forward, her ivory silk gown whispering against the manicured grass, looking every bit the tragedy-turned-princess that the society columns loved to write about.
"Nathaniel," she trilled softly, her voice carrying just enough for the front rows to hear. "Is everything all right? The minister is waiting, and the light for the photographs—"
"The wedding is canceled, Vanessa."
His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the string quartet like a razor. The music stopped mid-note. A collective intake of breath swept through the rows of seated guests.
Vanessa froze. For a fraction of a second, the perfect, fragile-bride mask slipped, revealing the calculating stranger underneath. Then, with practiced artistry, her eyes flooded with tears. Her lower lip trembled.
"Canceled?" she whispered, her voice cracking with manufactured devastation. "Nathaniel... what is this? Did someone say something? Is it... is it about the staff? I know the housekeeper’s child has been acting out, but—"
"Stop," Nathaniel said.
He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of authority behind it forced Vanessa to step back.
From the side entrance of the chapel, Marcus emerged, carrying a portable monitor. Behind him walked Carol, holding little Ivy’s hand, flanked by Rebecca Cross. The guests turned in their seats, whispering among themselves as they tried to make sense of the strange procession.
Vanessa’s face lost its color. The tears stopped instantly.
"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa demanded, her tone hardening, dropping the helpless act as she realized the trap closing around her. She looked at the gathered crowd, attempting a frantic recovery. "Look at them! A disgruntled employee and her family trying to sabotage my wedding day! Nathaniel, you can't possibly believe—"
"I don't believe, Vanessa. I know," Nathaniel interrupted. He walked toward her, stopping just an arm's length away. "I know about the St. Jude Hotel. I know about the falsified background check. And I know about the harassment captured on our security servers."
Marcus pressed play on the monitor.
The screen, angled toward the front rows of guests, lit up with the crystal-clear footage of Vanessa cornering Carol in the hallway, her face twisted in venomous malice, gripping her wrist until the skin turned white.
Gasps erupted from the wedding guests. Several prominent business associates of Nathaniel stood up from their chairs, their faces turning grim as they watched the video loop.
Vanessa stared at the screen, her chest heaving. Realizing that denial was no longer an option, her expression twisted into something chillingly cold. A bitter, ugly laugh escaped her lips.
"You fools," she hissed, her voice dropping the sweet cadence entirely. "You think a little security tape ruins me? You think a hotel fire from six years ago holds up in court without a confession? I have rights! I am legally entitled to a settlement under our prenuptial agreement—signed, sealed, and notarized just three days ago!"
May you like
Nathaniel looked down at her with absolute disgust. "The prenup is contingent upon mutual honesty and the absence of criminal fraud, Vanessa. Our legal team already voided it forty minutes ago."
Before Vanessa could lunge forward or scream, two local police cruisers—summoned quietly by Marcus twenty minutes prior—pulled up the gravel drive with their lights flashing silently, doors opening as officers stepped out onto the Cross Estate grounds.
