Chapter 5 - Restoring the Foundation

The heavy oak doors of the study closed, cutting off the echo of Vanessa’s protests as she was escorted down the gravel driveway and placed into the back of the police cruiser.

Inside the room, the silence was profound. The oppressive weight that had hung over the Cross Estate for months seemed to lift all at once, replaced by the quiet, steady hum of the evening ventilation system.

Nathaniel exhaled slowly, loosening his silk tie and tossing it onto the corner of the desk. He looked across the room at Harrison and Marcus, offering a brief, exhausted nod of gratitude.

"Thank you, Harrison. Secure the corporate holdings and ensure the legal filings for the Boston authorities are expedited tonight."

"Consider it done, Nathaniel," Harrison replied, closing his briefcase and heading toward the door. "Take the rest of the week off. The board can handle the quarterly review."

Once the lawyers and officers had departed, only Nathaniel, Marcus, and Carol remained in the study. Carol stood near the doorway, her hands clasped tightly in front of her white apron. Little Ivy had fallen asleep against her shoulder, her thumb tucked safely into her mouth, completely exhausted by the tumultuous day.

Nathaniel walked around the desk, his expression softened by deep remorse.

"Carol," he said quietly, stopping a few feet away. "I am so sorry."

Carol looked up, her eyes unsuspicious and honest, though still shadowed by the trauma of what she had endured. "You didn't know, Mr. Nathaniel. She fooled everyone. Even the background investigators."

"I should have paid closer attention to my own home," Nathaniel said, his voice heavy with self-reproach. "When you hire people, you assume a duty of care. I failed to protect the staff who make this estate run. And most importantly, I failed to protect you and Ivy."

Marcus rested a reassuring hand on his sister’s shoulder. "She's safe now, Nathaniel. That's what matters. The past is out in the open."

"It's more than out in the open," Nathaniel declared, his tone hardening with renewed purpose. "Carol, effective immediately, I am appointing you as the Head of Estate Operations. You know every corner of this property, you care for the people here, and you possess an integrity that money cannot buy. If you are willing to accept the position, I want you to rebuild our staff protocols from the ground up."

Carol blinked, stunned. "Head of Operations? Mr. Nathaniel, I'm just a housekeeper—"

"You are the person who saved my life from a catastrophic mistake," Nathaniel corrected gently. "And little Ivy deserves to grow up in a home where staff are respected, valued, and safe."

At the mention of her name, Ivy stirred against Carol's shoulder, blinking sleepily. She looked up with her big, clear eyes, spotted Nathaniel, and gave a tiny, sleepy wave.

"Mr. Nathaniel," she mumbled softly. "Are the bad ladies gone?"

May you like

Nathaniel smiled, crouching down so he was at eye level with the little girl.

"Yes, sweetheart," Nathaniel said softly, reaching out to gently adjust the slipped ribbon in her curls. "The bad days are gone. Everything is safe now."
