Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun broke over the Boston harbor, casting a cold, metallic glare against the brick facade of the abandoned St. Jude Hotel. Six years had passed since the tragic fire that claimed three lives and left a scar on the city’s historic district, yet the investigation files remained open in the cold-case archives.
Inside the precinct office of Detective Miller, a veteran investigator with tired eyes and a cluttered desk, the case folder for the St. Jude fire lay open alongside the digital transfer logs forwarded by Cross Hospitality’s legal team.
The door opened, and Nathaniel Cross stepped into the office, holding a secure flash drive containing the decrypted financial records recovered from Vanessa’s offshore accounts.
"Detective Miller," Nathaniel said, placing the drive on the desk. "I believe this completes the puzzle you’ve been trying to solve for six years."
Miller looked up, adjusting his glasses, and stared at the billionaire. He inserted the flash drive into his terminal and watched as the data streams loaded—showing the exact routing numbers, IP addresses, and transaction histories linking Eleanor Vance, alias Vanessa Hale, to the embezzlement and subsequent arson at St. Jude.
"Well, I'll be," Miller muttered, leaning back in his squeaky chair. "We always knew someone on the inside bypassed the master circuit breaker to accelerate the fire before fleeing through the service elevator. But Vanessa covered her tracks so cleanly after the name change, we hit a dead end."
"She thought she was untouchable," Nathaniel said, standing by the barred window overlooking the harbor. "She spent six years hiding behind a stolen identity, living off stolen relief funds, until she realized Carol Bennett was working at my estate and remembered her coat from that night."
Miller grunted, printing out a summary sheet. "And she tried to ruin Carol to silence her before she could come forward to us."
"She failed," Nathaniel said firmly. "And now every asset she acquired through fraud is being seized to establish a permanent memorial and survivor support fund for the families affected by the St. Jude fire."
Miller looked up, surprised respect in his eyes. "That's a lot of capital, Mr. Cross. Are you sure your board will approve it?"
"My board answers to me," Nathaniel replied without hesitation. "And true security isn't built on luxury hotels or hidden clauses. It's built on justice."

Later that afternoon, Detective Miller’s team moved in to secure formal indictments against Vanessa at the county detention center. Facing federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and multiple counts of falsifying government documents, her cold composure finally cracked into bitter, helpless silence as the prison doors slammed shut behind her.
Back at the Cross Estate, the atmosphere was completely transformed. The white roses in the garden seemed brighter, the stone walkways echoed with laughter, and for the first time in years, the staff quarters buzzed with genuine warmth and security.
