Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at Court

The county courthouse steps were crowded with reporters and flashing cameras by Tuesday morning. Word of Daniel Brooks’ high-profile divorce and custody battle had leaked to the tabloids over the weekend, sparking a media frenzy. Flashbulbs popped like lightning as black town cars pulled up to the curb.
Daniel stepped out first, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, his expression a mask of cold composure. He turned and offered a hand to Emma, who walked beside him, clutching a brand-new teddy bear—one with both eyes intact—while Mrs. Helen walked close behind, shielding the little girl from the glare of the cameras.
Inside the courthouse, the atmosphere was tense and orderly.
Vanessa sat at the opposing defense table, flanked by her high-priced legal team. She looked remarkably different from the night Daniel had found her; she wore a conservative, high-necked designer dress designed to project innocence and maternal grief, though the twitch in her jaw and the aggressive way she gripped her handbag betrayed her anxiety.
When Daniel and Emma entered the gallery, Vanessa’s eyes locked onto her daughter.
“Emma! Baby!” Vanessa cried out, standing up and taking a step forward. “Mummy’s here! Tell them what they’re saying isn't true—tell them you love me!”
Emma shrank back instinctively, hiding her face against Daniel’s leg. Daniel stepped forward, placing a protective hand on his daughter’s shoulder, his gaze fixed on Vanessa with icy disdain.
“Sit down, Mrs. Brooks,” the bailiff warned sternly.
Vanessa glared at Daniel, her mask of innocence cracking for a split second to reveal a flash of pure venom before she sat back down heavily.
The judge, a stern-faced woman with decades on the bench, banged her gavel. “Case number 4821, Brooks versus Brooks. We are here today to address emergency custody and asset division.”
For the next two hours, Marcus Vance dismantled Vanessa’s defense piece by piece. He presented the medical reports detailing Emma’s exposure and malnutrition. He submitted photographic evidence of the hazardous, drug-and-alcohol-fueled parties thrown in the family home while the child was locked out. And finally, he dropped the financial bombshell: the forensic audit tracing millions in embezzled funds directly to the shell companies operated by Tyler and Vanessa.
Vanessa’s lawyers tried desperately to object, arguing that the financial matters were separate from family law, but the judge overruled them sharply, citing the blatant disregard for familial welfare.
When Vanessa took the stand, her performance crumbled under cross-examination. When asked why a six-year-old child was found sleeping on the concrete pavement in the rain, she stammered, blamed the nanny, blamed Daniel’s absence, and finally broke down into tearful accusations that she was the real victim of a controlling, neglectful husband.

The judge listened in stony silence, occasionally making notes on her pad.
Finally, the judge raised her hand, silencing the courtroom.
