Chapter 5 - The Legal Storm

Three days had passed since Daniel’s return, and the household had begun to take on a familiar, comforting rhythm. Mrs. Helen had returned with open arms, smothering Emma in affection, baking her favorite cookies, and turning the estate back into a warm, vibrant home. The lingering shadows in Emma’s eyes were slowly being replaced by the bright, carefree laughter of a six-year-old child.

Down in the study, however, the atmosphere was strictly business.

Daniel sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, flanked by Marcus Vance, his senior corporate and personal attorney—a sharp, impeccably dressed man with silver temples and a reputation for absolute ruthlessness in the courtroom.

Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the desk.

“Everything is in place, Daniel,” Marcus said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “The divorce papers have been filed under grounds of abandonment, extreme neglect, and moral misconduct. Furthermore, given the circumstances surrounding Emma’s endangerment, we have initiated emergency child custody proceedings. Based on the police report from the night you arrived—complete with the medical evaluation of Emma’s exposure and bruising—Vanessa hasn't got a legal leg to stand on.”

Daniel opened the folder, scanning the crisp pages of legalese. His expression remained hard, unyielding. “And her financial demands?”

“She tried through her lawyer yesterday to demand fifty percent of liquid assets and alimony matching her previous lifestyle,” Marcus said with a dry, humorless smirk. “That was before we slapped her with a countersuit for corporate embezzlement.”

Daniel looked up sharply. “Embezzlement?”

“Indeed,” Marcus nodded, tapping a specific paper in the file. “During your audit over the last forty-eight hours, my forensic accountants discovered that over the past six months, Vanessa diverted nearly two million dollars from your joint philanthropic foundation and private accounts into shell companies managed by none other than Tyler Vance—the gentleman you found lounging in your bedroom.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place. The lavish spending, the constant demands for more capital, the sudden dismissal of trustworthy staff like Mrs. Helen—it wasn't just recklessness; it was a calculated liquidation of his assets behind his back.

“She thought you were going to be tied up in that international merger for at least another three months,” Marcus continued. “She was planning to empty the accounts entirely, file for a high-maintenance divorce while you were abroad, and skip the country with Tyler. You caught her right in the middle of Act Two.”

“I want every cent recovered,” Daniel said quietly, his voice carrying an edge of absolute steel. “And I want sole, unconditional custody of Emma. I don’t ever want that woman anywhere near my daughter again.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus replied, standing up and buttoning his jacket. “We have a court summons scheduled for next Tuesday morning. I’ll handle the press statements to ensure your privacy and Emma’s protection are airtight.”

As Marcus left, Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, looking out the window toward the garden where Emma was currently chasing a butterfly with Mrs. Helen watching closely nearby. The storm was gathering, and Vanessa was about to learn the true cost of her cruelty.
