Chapter 1 - The Return and the Threshold

Rain clung to the pavement like a mirror when the taxi door shut behind Daniel Brooks. The city lights blurred in the distance, but none of it mattered—not after weeks away, not after long flights and endless meetings.

All that mattered was the moment he would walk through that door and see his family again.

That was the plan.

A quiet return. A simple surprise.

Instead, a small, fragile voice cut through the night.

“Dad… please… don’t let her hurt me again…”

Daniel stopped cold.

At first, his mind refused to make sense of what his eyes were seeing. A child sat on the wet sidewalk just outside his gate, barefoot, knees pressed into the cold ground, carefully gathering tiny stones as if nothing else in the world existed.

A yellow dress, once bright, now stained and torn.

Hair tangled.

Arms wrapped tightly around an old teddy bear missing one eye.

For a moment, everything felt unreal.

Then recognition hit.

“Emma…?”

The girl looked up slowly, confusion flickering across her face before it turned into relief. The stones slipped from her fingers as she ran toward him, stumbling, desperate.

“Dad… you came back…”

He caught her in his arms—and the shock that followed had nothing to do with the rain.

She was too light.

Too cold.

Too fragile.

His hold tightened instinctively as dread began to climb up his spine.

“What are you doing out here? Where’s Vanessa?”

Emma pressed her face into his shoulder, her voice small and trembling.

“She said you died… she said you weren’t coming back… she told me to wait outside…”

The words didn’t land all at once.

They sank in slowly.

And each second made them worse.

Music drifted faintly from inside the house. Laughter followed it—loud, careless, completely out of place.

Daniel turned toward the door, his jaw tightening.

“How long have you been out here?”

Emma hesitated.

“Since yesterday… I got scared when it got dark… but I thought if I stayed, you would find me…”

Something inside him snapped—quietly, but completely.

He looked down at her feet, sore from the cold, small cuts tracing along her skin. Marks showed on her arms, faint but undeniable.

Without another word, he lifted her and walked toward the house.

The moment the door opened, everything felt wrong.

The air was thick with alcohol and smoke. Music pulsed through the walls. Bottles, clothes, and strangers’ belongings were scattered across the once-perfect living room like the aftermath of something reckless and uncontrolled.

This wasn’t neglect.

This was abandonment.

Emma clung to him tighter.

“They’re upstairs… with Aunt Vanessa…”

Daniel didn’t answer.

He just moved.

Each step up the stairs pulled him deeper into something he didn’t recognize anymore. Voices grew louder. Male voices. Laughter that didn’t belong in a home where a child had been left outside in the cold.

His bedroom door stood slightly open.

Inside.

Vanessa.

Not the woman he left behind.

Disheveled. Laughing. Surrounded by men who had no business being there.

For a moment, the world narrowed to a single, unbearable truth.

But Emma shifted in his arms, trembling.

“Dad… can I go to my room? I’m really cold…”

That was enough.

He turned away.

Anger could wait.

His daughter couldn’t.

He carried her down the hall and pushed open her bedroom door—

and everything inside him broke.

The air was stale.

Plates of old food sat untouched on the floor.

The bed hadn’t been used properly for days.

This wasn’t a child’s room anymore.

It was a place someone had forgotten existed.

“When did you last eat?” he asked, his voice barely steady.

Emma thought for a moment, counting quietly on her fingers.

“I don’t remember… Aunt Vanessa said I wasn’t allowed downstairs when people visit…”

Daniel closed his eyes for a second—but it wasn’t enough to stop what was rising inside him.

Something fierce.

Something final.

“And Mrs. Helen?” he asked suddenly. “Where is she?”

Emma looked up at him—

and the answer she gave next made the entire situation darker than he had imagined.

What she revealed next changed everything.
