Chapter 4 - The Healing Begins

The morning sun rose pale and hesitant over the sprawling estate, casting long, slanting beams through the tall windows of the living room. The debris from the night before was gone; Daniel had spent the early hours cleaning up the mess himself, refusing to let any strangers into the house while Emma slept.

Upstairs, Emma was wrapped in clean, warm pajamas, sitting propped up against a mountain of plush pillows in her newly sanitized bed. A steaming bowl of chicken soup sat on the bedside table, filling the room with a comforting, savory aroma.

Daniel sat on the edge of the mattress, carefully holding a spoon to her lips.

“Just a few more bites, sweetheart,” he coaxed gently.

Emma obediently swallowed, a faint wash of healthy color finally returning to her pale cheeks. “Is she gone, Dad?” she asked softly, her eyes darting toward the door as if expecting Vanessa to suddenly walk back in.

“She’s gone,” Daniel confirmed, his hand resting reassuringly over hers. “She packed her things and left before sunrise. She’s never coming back here, Emma. You are safe.”

A visible weight seemed to lift off the little girl’s shoulders. She let out a long breath, her small frame relaxing against the pillows. “Will Mrs. Helen come back?”

Daniel smiled softly, though a flicker of determination flashed in his eyes. “I’m calling her first thing this morning. If she’s willing, she’ll be back by lunchtime.”

True to his word, as soon as Emma had finished her breakfast and drifted off into a peaceful, secure sleep, Daniel descended to his study. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number he knew by heart. It rang three times before a warm, familiar voice answered on the other end.

“Hello?”

“Mrs. Helen,” Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s Daniel.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the line. “Mr. Brooks… Oh, Mr. Brooks, I’ve been so worried sick about Emma! I tried calling, but my number was blocked, and when I came by the gate, security wouldn’t let me—is she okay? Is the little angel safe?”

“She’s safe now,” Daniel assured her, closing his eyes tightly. “I came home last night. I found her outside. Helen… I am so, so sorry for what happened under my roof. I failed you, and more importantly, I failed her.”

“Oh, son,” Mrs. Helen’s voice softened, the grandmotherly warmth returning instantly. “Don’t blame yourself entirely. That woman… she was a monster behind closed doors. But what matters is that you’re back.”

“I need you, Helen,” Daniel said without hesitation. “Emma needs you. Can you come back home? Name your terms—whatever it takes. I want you back managing this household, starting today.”

“I don’t need terms, Mr. Brooks,” Helen replied firmly, her voice steady with resolve. “I’ll be there in an hour. Keep the kettle warm.”

Daniel hung up the phone, feeling the first genuine sense of peace he had experienced since stepping out of the taxi. But peace was only the first step. Justice and protection required more than just cleaning house.

He opened his laptop, pulled up his private legal counsel’s contact information, and began to type out an email that would start a legal storm Vanessa would never see coming.
