Chapter 8 - The Surprise After-School Visit

Two weeks later, the corporate café at Brooks Enterprises was buzzing with its usual midday rush.
The manager, looking nervous and excessively polite, wiped down the espresso machine while casting anxious glances toward the private elevator.
Suddenly, the private elevator chimed.
The doors slid open, but it wasn't Nathan Brooks who stepped out.
It was a little girl with a worn German fairy-tale book tucked under her arm, wearing a brand-new pink coat and shiny black shoes. Lily Warren walked out of the elevator like she owned the building.
The café manager rushed over, stuttering slightly. "L-Lily! Welcome back! Are you... are you here to see your mother?"
Lily looked up at him with polite, calm confidence.
"No, Mr. Henderson," Lily said smoothly in English, adjusting her backpack. "My mother is in a board meeting on the twelfth floor closing a European logistics contract. I am here to see Mr. Brooks. He invited me for hot chocolate in his office."
Before the manager could respond, the elevator chimed again.
Nathan Brooks stepped out into the café. He wasn't wearing his usual rigid, intimidating scowl. Instead, he was smiling—a real, warm smile that made the female executives nearby double-take in disbelief.
"Ah, there she is," Nathan said, walking over and kneeling down to Lily’s eye level. "Did you bring your German book today, Lily? I need someone to translate a Frankfurt real estate portfolio for me before lunch."
Lily giggled, pulling the book from under her arm. "Only if you let me press the buttons on your big phone, Mr. Brooks."
May you like
"Deal," Nathan laughed, standing up and extending his hand. Lily placed her small hand confidently in his large palm.
As they walked back toward the private elevator together, the entire café watched in stunned silence. The broken dreams of the basement were gone, replaced by a future built on unbreakable brilliance.
