Chapter 4 - The Arrival At Dawn

The New York morning sun sliced through the fog over the East River, casting a pale gold light across the glass façade of Brooks Enterprises.
Inside the twelfth-floor lobby, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Security guards stood at attention near the elevators. Nathan Brooks stood by the window, adjusting his cufflinks, looking every bit the apex predator of the corporate world.
Beside him stood Emma. Her hair was pulled back into a flawless French twist, her dark blue suit fitted to perfection. On the table before her lay three leather-bound folios containing the restructured M&A agreement—a document so watertight it left Müller GmbH zero room for negotiation.
At exactly 8:58 AM, the private elevator chimed.
The doors slid open with a soft pneumatic hiss.
Two men stepped out.
The first was Marcus Hoffman, older now, his temples dusted with silver, wearing a sharp charcoal suit that spoke of effortless European wealth.
The second man walked behind him, carrying a leather briefcase. He was tall, striking, with piercing blue eyes and an expensive watch catching the morning light. As he stepped fully into the bright lobby, his eyes swept across the room—and then instantly froze.
His name was Julian Vance.
Seven years ago, Julian Vance had been the rising star of corporate finance in Frankfurt. He had been the man who promised Emma the world, whispered sweet assurances of a shared future, and then vanished into the upper echelons of European venture capital when an inconvenient pregnancy threatened to derail his upward trajectory. He was the man who had left her stranded in a foreign city with an empty bank account and a broken heart.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.
"Emma..." Julian whispered, the name slipping out before he could stop it.
Marcus Hoffman blinked, looking back and forth between Julian and the poised woman standing beside Nathan Brooks. "Vance? Do you know Ms. Warren?"

Emma did not flinch. She did not look away. She picked up her folio, stepped forward, and looked straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to erase her existence.
"Good morning, Herr Vance," Emma said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent lobby. "Welcome to New York. Let’s discuss your valuation."
