Chapter 3 - The Setup In The Boardroom

By 2:00 PM, the twelfth-floor executive conference room had been transformed into a war zone of high-stakes corporate strategy.

Charts glowed across three massive LED monitors. Spreadsheets detailing asset valuation, debt-to-equity ratios, and cross-border tax implications covered the polished walnut table. At the head of the table sat Nathan Brooks, arms crossed, watching Emma.

She was no longer the exhausted woman in a stained apron. Wearing a sharply tailored charcoal blazer she had kept hidden in the back of her closet for years—a relic from her life in Frankfurt—Emma moved with absolute precision. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, pulling up legacy contracts from Müller GmbH that the company’s highest-paid consultants had missed for three weeks.

"Look at Section 14B," Emma said clearly, pointing to a highlighted clause on the main screen. "Müller GmbH isn't just acquiring our manufacturing plants; they are inheriting a legacy environmental liability from our 2018 subsidiary merger in Stuttgart. If we don't carve that liability out of the primary contract before tomorrow morning, their lead legal counsel will use it to slash our acquisition valuation by forty percent."

The lead corporate attorney, a silver-haired man named Henderson who had spent the morning trying to undermine Emma’s presence, dropped his pen.

He stared at the screen, then at Emma, his face draining of color. "Good God... she’s right. That clause is a ticking time bomb."

Nathan didn't smile, but a glint of absolute satisfaction flashed in his eyes. He turned to Henderson. "You heard her. Rewrite the addendum immediately. And have it translated into German by a certified legal specialist—or better yet, let Ms. Warren do it."

"I don't need a specialist," Emma said calmly, her fingers flying across her tablet. "I drafted the original template for this exact type of clause during my time at Deutsche Bank. I can have the revised addendum ready in twenty minutes."

As Emma worked, the door to the conference room opened quietly.

A young executive stepped inside, holding a secure tablet. "Mr. Brooks, we just received confirmation from JFK. Private flight from Berlin has landed. Marcus Hoffman and the primary stakeholder have cleared customs and are en route to the hotel."

Nathan nodded, dismissing the aide with a flick of his wrist. He turned his gaze back to Emma. "Are you ready for this, Emma?"

May you like

Emma paused, her hand resting on the edge of the table. Her heart raced, but her voice was ice-cold. "I have spent seven years wondering how I would survive without a safety net, Mr. Brooks. I am more than ready to show them what happens when you underestimate someone who built their life from the ashes."

Nathan leaned back in his leather chair, a rare, approving smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "That’s what I like to hear. Because tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, when those double doors open, Berlin is going to find out that Brooks Enterprises doesn't play by their rules anymore. We play by yours."
