Chapter 7 - A Light in the Storm

On Christmas Eve, the worst blizzard of the decade hit the city. Heavy snow knocked out power lines across several districts, plunging streets into darkness and freezing cold.
Ethan sat in his high-rise apartment, looking out at the roaring white gale outside. His apartment was warm, powered by a backup generator, but his thoughts were entirely focused on Clara and Lily in their new townhouse.
Unable to sit still, Ethan put on his heavy winter gear, grabbed a emergency supply kit, and headed down to his four-wheel-drive SUV.
The streets were nearly impassable, blocked by drift snow and abandoned cars. But Ethan drove patiently through the storm, driven by a protective instinct he had never felt before.
When he finally pulled up to Clara’s townhouse, he noticed the windows were dark. The power in her neighborhood had failed.
Ethan rushed up the walk and knocked on the door.
A moment later, Clara opened the door, wrapped in a thick blanket, holding a candle. Her eyes lit up with instant warmth when she saw him.
"Ethan! What are you doing out in this terrible storm?" she exclaimed, stepping back to let him in.
"The grid went down in this sector," Ethan said, placing the supply kit on the counter. "I brought heavy blankets, flashlights, and hot thermos soups. Are you two okay?"
"We're warm," Clara smiled, gesturing toward the fireplace, where a bright fire was crackling merrily. "I managed to start a fire."
Lily ran out from the living room, wrapped in a giant fleece blanket like a little cocoon. "Ethan! You came!"
"Of course I came," Ethan smiled, dropping to one knee to hug her tight. "I couldn't let my favorite artist freeze on Christmas Eve."
Together, they sat by the glowing fireplace as the storm roared against the windowpanes outside. Ethan set up portable battery lanterns, filling the cozy room with soft, golden light.
They shared hot soup, laughed, and told stories. For the first time in his adult life, Ethan didn't feel like a high-powered attorney sitting in an empty luxury apartment. He felt completely at home.
As the night grew late, Lily fell fast asleep on the rug, snuggled beside her stuffed rabbit and wrapped in her fleece blanket.
Ethan and Clara sat close together on the sofa, watching the flickering firelight.
"You came all the way through a blizzard just to check on us," Clara said softly, looking into his eyes.
"I would cross much more than a blizzard for you, Clara," Ethan replied, his voice filled with deep tenderness.
Clara leaned in, her hand gently resting on his cheek. Ethan reached up, holding her hand against his face, before leaning forward to kiss her gently on the lips.
The kiss was sweet, warm, and filled with a quiet promise of a future together. When they pulled back, Clara smiled softly, resting her forehead against his.

"Merry Christmas, Ethan," she whispered.
"Merry Christmas, Clara," he replied.
