Chapter 6 - The Quiet Restoration

Over the next two weeks, Ethan’s legal team worked tirelessly.

Using his firm's extensive resources, Ethan reviewed the unlawful termination of Clara’s architectural employment five years prior. He personally confronted her former firm’s executive board, presenting irrefutable evidence of contract breach and stolen intellectual property. Faced with a devastating lawsuit from Carter & Rowe, the firm agreed to an immediate out-of-court settlement: full back pay, royalties, and compensation totaling over $450,000.

When Ethan brought the legal settlement documents to Clara’s apartment, she stared at the official bank confirmation in complete disbelief.

"This... this isn't possible," Clara whispered, her hands trembling as she held the paper. "Ethan, how?"

"It is your money, Clara," Ethan said warmly, sitting across from her. "They took advantage of your grief and vulnerability years ago. I simply forced them to pay what they owed you all along."

"I don't know how to repay you," Clara sobbed, tears of immense relief finally washing away five years of quiet agony and exhaustion. "You’ve changed our entire lives."

"You don't owe me anything, Clara," Ethan replied softly. "Except... perhaps one thing."

Clara wiped her eyes, looking at him curiously. "Anything."

"Carter & Rowe is establishing a corporate charitable foundation to replace the corrupt board at Northbridge," Ethan said. "We need an executive director who understands design, logistics, and most importantly, who has real empathy for families in need. The salary is substantial, and the position is yours if you want it."

Clara covered her mouth with both hands. "Ethan... are you serious?"

"I have never been more serious about anything in my life," Ethan said, his eyes filled with profound admiration. "You are brilliant, strong, and resilient, Clara. You deserve to shine again."

With her back pay restored and a prestigious new career ahead, Clara was able to move out of the drafty apartment. Ethan helped her find a sunlit three-bedroom townhouse in a quiet, safe neighborhood with a large backyard for Lily.

On the day they moved in, Lily ran through the spacious living room, marveling at the bright hardwood floors and the big fireplace.

"Look, Mom!" Lily called out, pointing to the window. "We have a real garden!"

Clara stood by the doorway, watching her daughter laugh freely without a care in the world. Ethan stepped up beside her, leaning his shoulder gently against hers.

"Thank you, Ethan," Clara murmured softly, placing her head gently against his shoulder.

Ethan wrapped an arm around her shoulders, holding her close. "You did this, Clara. I just provided the key."
