Chapter 4 - A Visitor at Winter’s Edge

The following week brought heavy snowfall to the city, blanketing the streets in thick white frost. The corporate offices of Carter & Rowe were warm and humming with activity, but Ethan found himself unable to focus on his corporate legal briefs.
Instead, he spent his morning reviewing the documentation his private investigators had pulled regarding Clara Vance.
What he discovered moved him deeply.
Clara had not always struggled financially. Five years prior, she had been an accomplished architectural designer, working for a prominent firm in the city. But when her husband passed away suddenly after a brief, devastating illness, she was left with overwhelming medical debts. To make matters worse, her former firm had unceremoniously laid her off shortly after, exploiting a loophole in her contract to avoid paying her severance or royalties for her design work.
Rather than giving up, Clara had taken any job available—working morning shifts at a local bakery and evening shifts cleaning commercial offices—all to keep a roof over Lily's head and pay off debts that weren't even hers.
"Sir?" Ethan's assistant, Sarah, knocked gently on his open office door. "The legal audit for Northbridge Elementary is complete. You were right. The administration was funneling high-value corporate donations away from underprivileged families and directing them toward wealthy donors' children to secure private funding."
Ethan's jaw tightened. "Send the complete file to the district attorney and the school board chairman immediately. Demand Principal Bell’s administrative suspension by noon."
"Understood, Mr. Carter."
Ethan stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city. The snow was falling thicker now, a bitter wind whipping around the skyscrapers. He thought of Lily's thin coat and Clara's worn trench coat.
"Sarah, clear my schedule for the rest of the afternoon," Ethan said, taking his wool coat from the rack.
An hour later, Ethan’s sedan pulled up outside a weathered three-story brick apartment building on the east side of town. The building was old, with rusting fire escapes and drafty windows.
Ethan walked up the stairs to the third floor and stopped at Apartment 3B. He knocked gently.
A moment later, the door creaked open, held by a safety chain. Clara looked through the crack, her eyes widening in surprise.
"Mr. Carter?"
"Hello, Clara," Ethan said politely, carrying a large insulated bag and a flat leather folder. "I hope I'm not intruding. I wanted to drop off some paperwork regarding the school audit, and... I brought some lunch."
Clara hesitated, then unlatched the chain and opened the door wide. "Please, come in. Excuse the mess."
The apartment was small and sparsely furnished, but it was immaculate. Warmth radiated from a small portable heater in the corner, and the smell of fresh cinnamon filled the room. Drawings by Lily were neatly taped to the walls—vibrant, beautiful sketches of trees, animals, and magical landscapes.
"Your daughter is remarkably talented," Ethan remarked, admiring a drawing of a winter forest.
"She gets it from her mother," Clara said softly, stepping into the tiny kitchen area. "Though I haven't picked up a pencil in years. Can I offer you tea?"
"That would be lovely," Ethan replied, sitting down at the modest kitchen table.
Lily popped her head out of her bedroom, her eyes lighting up when she saw Ethan. "Ethan!"
"Hello, Lily," Ethan smiled, taking out a fresh sketchbook and a professional set of drawing pens from his bag. "I brought a small addition for your art collection."
Lily’s eyes shone with delight as she took the sketchbook. "Thank you! I'm drawing a picture of the winter rabbit!"
"Show me when you're finished," Ethan said warmly. Lily nodded happily and hurried back to her desk.
Clara set two steaming mugs of tea on the table and sat down across from him, her hands wrapped around her cup for warmth. "You didn't come here just to deliver art supplies, did you, Mr. Carter?"
Ethan leaned back, his expression turning serious yet soft. "No, Clara. I came to tell you that Principal Bell has been suspended pending a full investigation into financial fraud at Northbridge Elementary."
Clara gasped softly. "Fraud?"
"She was misusing charity funds," Ethan explained. "Your application was never late, Clara. She deliberately excluded families like yours to keep donation metrics appearing 'exclusive' for wealthy patrons."
May you like
Clara stared at him, tears welling in her eyes. "I thought... I thought I had failed Lily. I thought I couldn't even manage to fill out a simple form on time."
"You didn't fail anyone," Ethan said firmly, reaching across the table to lay a reassuring hand near hers. "The system failed you. But I intend to make sure it never happens again."
