Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the King

The nurse did not hesitate. The moment the name Sterling crossed my lips, her professional demeanor shifted into one of absolute urgency. She bypassed the standard room telephone, pulled out her personal cell phone, and dialed a number she seemingly had memorized.

Dominic scoffed, crossing his arms while still holding a crying Sophia. Chloe leaned against his shoulder, her expensive silk blouse rustling as she sighed in mock boredom.

"Vivienne, please," Dominic said, rolling his eyes. "Who are you trying to scare? Your father is a retired schoolteacher from upstate. Do you really think some old man with a pension is going to stop my legal team?"

"A schoolteacher?" Eleanor chuckled, adjusting her pearl necklace. "Oh, Dominic, dear, don't be cruel. Let her call her little family. It's cute that she thinks they have any standing here. But let's be realistic: we own this city's real estate. We practically fund this hospital's local wing. Your father is nothing."

I didn't answer them. I kept my eyes on Sophia. My heart ached at the sound of her cries, but I forced my breathing to remain steady. I needed to be strong. For three years, I had hidden my true identity, wanting to prove to myself—and to my father—that I could build a life on my own merits, free from the overwhelming shadow of the Sterling Empire. I had fallen in love with Dominic, believing he loved me for me.

Now, I realized how foolish that pride had been. My silence had allowed these vultures to circle.

Ten minutes passed in tense silence. Dominic grew restless. He checked his gold Rolex.

"We're leaving," he declared, turning toward the door. "Chloe, grab the baby bag. Eleanor, let's go."

Before he could reach the door handle, it flew open.

The hospital hallway, which had been quiet moments ago, was suddenly filled with the heavy, rhythmic thud of polished leather boots. Six tall, imposing men in matching tailored black suits and earpieces filed into the room, instantly forming a protective barrier in front of my bed and blocking the exit.

Dominic took a step back, startled. "What is the meaning of this? Security! Call hospital security!"

"They won't be helping you, Mr. Vance," a cold, authoritative voice boomed from the hallway.

The security guards parted. Walking through them was a man who commanded the gravity of the entire room. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue suit. His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, and his eyes, cold as steel, locked onto Dominic.

Arthur Sterling. My father.

Behind him walked a team of three lawyers, led by a woman I recognized instantly—Sarah Jenkins, the most feared corporate and family attorney in the country.

Arthur didn't even look at Dominic or Eleanor. He walked straight to my bedside, his stern expression instantly softening as he looked at my pale, exhausted face.

"Vivienne," he murmured, his voice thick with rare emotion. He reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. "My brave girl. I am so sorry I let you suffer in silence for so long."

"Dad," I whispered, tears finally escaping my eyes. "They have Sophia."

May you like

Arthur turned slowly. When his gaze fell upon Dominic, the warmth vanished, replaced by an icy fury that made Dominic visibly flinch.

"Set my granddaughter down," Arthur commanded. "Before I have my men take her from you by force."
