Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Reclamation
On a chilly Friday afternoon, the jury returned with their verdicts.
Emily sat in the front row of the gallery, Daniel standing steadfastly right behind her, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder.
The jury foreperson stood up.
Andrew Whitfield: Guilty on all counts, including conspiracy, medical fraud, identity theft, and corporate bribery. Sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.
Rachel Adams: Guilty of conspiracy, criminal forgery, and illegal medical procurement. Sentenced to 8 years in state prison.
Margaret Whitfield: Guilty of bribery, tampering with medical evidence, and orchestrating financial fraud. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, with her vast personal assets heavily fined and frozen to pay for restitution.
As the judge slammed the gavel down, finalizing the sentences, Margaret looked back at Emily. The proud, arrogant matriarch was completely broken, tears ruining her expensive makeup as she was led away in handcuffs.
Emily didn't smile, nor did she gloat. She simply turned around, looked up at Daniel, and smiled a genuine, free smile.
