Chapter 6 - Secrets of the Past Exposed

With custody secured, the criminal trial loomed on the horizon. Commander Daniel Hayes worked tirelessly, spending long evenings with Emily to ensure every loophole was closed. Over those weeks, their professional relationship shifted into something deeper. Daniel’s fierce protectiveness wasn't just about his job anymore; he cared deeply for Emily and the resilient life she was building for Lily.

During the discovery phase of the trial, Daniel uncovered an even darker layer to the Whitfield family saga.

"Emily, you need to see this," Daniel said one evening, sitting at her kitchen island while Lily slept soundly in the next room. He opened a laptop, showing financial spreadsheets dating back to Emily’s third year of marriage to Andrew.

"What am I looking at?" Emily asked.

"During your second round of IVF, the medical bills were supposedly paid by Andrew’s corporate account," Daniel explained. "But look at the internal memos from Margaret’s private trust. Margaret was paying Dr. Evans’ clinic large 'consulting fees' even back then. She purposefully instructed the clinic to use lower-potency hormone treatments on you during your later cycles."

Emily gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "She... she sabotaged my treatments?"

"She wanted you to fail, Emily," Daniel said softly, placing his hand over hers. "Margaret wanted an excuse for Andrew to divorce you so he could marry Rachel, whose family had corporate alignments Margaret wanted. But they kept your final, highly viable embryo in deep freeze as a backup plan, knowing they could steal it once you were out of the picture."

The depth of the cruelty was staggering, but instead of breaking her, it ignited a cold, unbreakable resolve. Emily looked at Daniel, her eyes flashing with determination. "They thought they could play God with my life. Let's make sure they never get the chance to ruin anyone else's."
