Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Whitfield Estate

The iron gates of the Whitfield Estate in Cherry Hills Village did not protect them from the flashing blue and red lights of the Denver Police Department.
Inside the sprawling, pristine living room, chaos reigned. Rachel Adams-Whitfield was screaming, her perfectly styled blonde hair falling wildly out of its pins as a female officer held her arms behind her back. Andrew Whitfield stood near the fireplace, his hands already secured in steel handcuffs, his face a mask of furious desperation.
"You can't do this! I am Andrew Whitfield! My father built this city!" Andrew roared, thrashing against the detective holding him.
"Your father isn't here, Mr. Whitfield, and his money can't buy back a forged government document," the detective replied coldly.
The front door opened, and Emily walked in, flanked by Commander Daniel Hayes and a social worker carrying a car seat.
When Rachel saw Emily, her eyes widened with a terrifying mix of malice and fear. "Emily! You crazy bitch! You did this, didn't you? You're jealous! You're jealous because Andrew loved me, because I gave him the baby you never could!"
Emily walked up to Rachel, stopping just inches away. She didn't look angry; she looked completely detached, as if looking at a stranger.
"You didn't give him anything, Rachel," Emily said, her voice cutting through Rachel’s hysteria. "The doctors ran a DNA sweep on Lily this morning using the cord blood registry from her birth. It’s a perfect match to my genetic profile. You didn't carry your own child. You carried mine. You stole my best friend, you stole my husband, and then you stole my flesh and blood."
Rachel gasped, her jaw dropping as she looked from Emily to Andrew. "Andrew... Andrew, what is she talking about? You told me it was an anonymous donor egg! You told me it was clean!"
Andrew looked away, refusing to meet Rachel’s eyes. The truth was out. In his arrogance, Andrew had lied to everyone, convincing Rachel that they were using a legal donor egg because he knew Rachel would never risk jail time. He had used Rachel as a vessel to get the heir his mother demanded, all while punishing Emily.

From upstairs, the soft, piercing cry of a five-month-old baby echoed down the grand staircase.
Emily’s entire body reacted instinctively. The phantom ache she had carried in her chest for years suddenly crystallized into pure, maternal drive. She didn't wait for the social worker. She walked past the police, past her trembling ex-husband, and climbed the stairs.
