Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Forgery

Two hours later, Emily sat in a glass-walled conference room at the District Attorney’s Office, a warm mug of tea between her hands. Commander Hayes sat across from her, his expressions softening completely from the hardened investigator he had been at the clinic.
"Are you holding up okay, Emily?" Daniel asked gently.
"I feel like I'm waking up from a six-year nightmare," Emily admitted, looking up at him. "When Andrew left me, he made me feel like I was broken. Like my body was a failure. To find out that he took the only viable embryo we ever created—the one from our final, exhausting round of IVF—and planted it in my best friend... it’s a level of cruelty I can't even comprehend."
Daniel tapped the documents spread across the table. "The timeline is incredibly damning. According to our digital forensics team, the moment you moved out of the marital home, Andrew realized he couldn't legally access the remaining cryopreserved embryo without your physical presence and a verified signature. He and Rachel were already together. Rachel wanted a child immediately to solidify her place in the Whitfield fortune."
"So they forged my name," Emily whispered.
"Worse," Daniel said, pointing to a specific line in the medical release form. "They used Rachel’s medical profile but superimposed your embryo’s identification serial number. Andrew used his corporate connections to bribe a lower-level technician at Willow Creek—a man named Thomas Wright—to swap the vials in the lab. Rachel underwent the transfer believing, or at least pretending to believe, that she was receiving a donor egg. But Andrew and his mother knew exactly whose child it was."
Marcus Vance, Emily’s attorney, leaned forward. "This changes everything regarding your divorce settlement, Emily. The lifestyle clauses, the emotional distress, and most importantly, parental rights. Biologically, genetically, and legally, Lily is your daughter. Rachel Adams has absolutely no genetic connection to that child."
Emily’s heart skipped a beat. Lily. The little girl Margaret had bragged about. The child she thought belonged to her ex-husband and the woman who betrayed her.
"What happens to the baby now?" Emily asked, her voice cracking with a mixture of awe and fear.

"Right now, Child Protective Services is monitoring the situation at the Whitfield home while the arrest warrants are executed," Daniel explained, his eyes locking onto hers with fierce reassurance. "Andrew and Rachel are facing felony charges. They will not be allowed to keep that child. The court is going to have to determine immediate custody. And as the sole biological mother who never consented to relinquishing her rights, you have the strongest claim."
Emily looked out the window at the Denver skyline. The grey clouds were starting to part, letting a single beam of morning sunlight pierce through. For the first time in a year, she didn't feel like a victim. She felt like a mother with a purpose.
