Chapter 9 - As evening fell

As evening fell the Velasco estate in Bosques de las Lomas looked entirely different.

Gone was the cold, sterile luxury of the past. The heavy velvet drapes had been replaced with light, natural linens that let the warm afternoon sun flood the halls. The nursery was painted in soft, calming pastel tones, filled with plain organic cotton blankets and wooden toys.

There were no imported chemical sprays, no pretentious specialists whispering behind closed doors, and no shadow of tyranny in the corridors.

In the center of the manicured lawn, two-year-old Mateo toddled across the grass on unsteady legs, laughing as a golden retriever bounded around him.

Sofía sat on a white garden bench, wearing a simple sundress, laughing as she watched Mateo chase the dog.

Nicolás walked out from the French doors, carrying a tray with two glasses of fresh lemonade. He set the tray down on the patio table and sat beside Sofía, wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against his chest.

"Penny for your thoughts, Dr. Director," Nicolás murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her temple.

Sofía leaned into his embrace, resting her head against his shoulder. "I was just thinking about the day I drove up here in that old white Nissan Tsuru, carrying a bag full of basic medical supplies."

Nicolás smiled, looking out at his son. "The best thing that ever happened to this family."

"You almost fired me within the first five minutes," Sofía reminded him playfully.

"I was an arrogant bastard," Nicolás admitted readily. "Luckily, you had no respect for my authority."

"None at all," Sofía agreed.

From the driveway, the crunch of gravel signaled the arrival of a familiar car. Don Esteban walked out to greet the visitor, returning a moment later with Valeria, who was visiting from Madrid for the summer with her new partner, a kind-hearted international human rights lawyer.

Valeria waved brightly as she walked across the lawn, scooping up Mateo into her arms as the little boy squealed with joy.

Sofía watched them, feeling a profound sense of completeness wash over her.
