Chapter 4 - Nicolás’s head snapped toward the doorNicolás’s head snapped toward the door. The protective instinct of a cartel-backed empire flared in his eyes. He drew a polished black firearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket with terrifying speed.

"Stay here," he ordered, pulling open the door.
"Not a chance," Sofía said, grabbing her medical bag. "If someone is hurt down there, you'll need a nurse."
They raced down the grand marble staircase. The foyer was a scene of chaos. Shards of an antique crystal chandelier littered the floor, and three armed private security guards were pinned behind marble pillars, their weapons drawn.
Standing in the center of the foyer was a squad of federal tactical police officers, their rifles raised, led by a tall man in a dark tactical uniform with silver insignia on his collar.
Commander Alejandro Morales.
Nicolás descended the stairs slowly, his pistol lowered but ready, his body radiating lethal authority.
"Commander Morales," Nicolás said, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "You are trespassing on private property without a warrant."
Morales smiled coldly, stepping over the broken crystal. "We don't need a warrant, Nicolás. Not when we received an anonymous tip regarding illegal chemical storage and child endangerment linked to Velasco International."
Sofía watched from the landing above. An anonymous tip. Leonor must have called them herself to frame Nicolás or cover her tracks.
"My son had an allergic reaction to a faulty product," Nicolás said smoothly, stepping onto the ground floor. "It has been resolved. Clear your men out of my house."
"I can't do that," Morales replied, stepping closer. "The tip specified that toxic substances were deliberately introduced into the nursery to harm the heir. That constitutes an active felony investigation. We are searching the premises."
Morales motioned to his men, who began moving toward the east wing—the exact direction where Valeria and Mateo were hiding.
Nicolás’s eyes turned murderous. "Cross that threshold, Morales, and you leave in a body bag."
The tactical officers immediately raised their rifles, aiming directly at Nicolás. The air in the foyer turned ice cold. A single twitch of a finger would trigger a massacre.
"You think your money protects you from federal law?" Morales sneered, raising his own sidearm.
"He doesn't have to protect himself," a calm voice rang out from the stairs.
Morales looked up. Sofía descended the grand staircase step by step, her posture straight, her medical bag held firmly in her hand.
"Who the hell are you?" Morales demanded.
"I am the attending medical specialist who treated Mateo Velasco," Sofía announced loudly, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "And as the attending physician of record, I am officially filing an incident report for accidental contamination via a commercial cosmetic compound."
Morales frowned. "That contradicts the federal tip."
"The federal tip was filed by someone who had access to the nursery but lacked medical credentials," Sofía said, her gaze shifting briefly toward the shadowy hallway where Doña Leonor was watching from the sidelines. "I have the chemical sample, the patient logs, and the lab verification right here in my bag. There was no foul play, Commander. Just corporate negligence from an imported manufacturer."
She reached into her bag, pulling out the sealed evidence pouch containing the German fabric conditioner bottle, holding it up under the chandelier light.
Morales hesitated. He had come to execute a raid, hoping to find evidence to cripple Nicolás Velasco’s empire. Instead, he was facing an official medical report certified by a licensed nurse holding physical evidence.
"Hand over the pouch," Morales ordered.
"Only to a federal health inspector accompanied by a judicial magistrate," Sofía countered smoothly, remembering the legal protocols she had studied during her long night shifts. "Otherwise, seizing private medical evidence without a warrant is a federal violation of patient privacy laws."
Nicolás looked at Sofía, a flicker of profound respect crossing his hardened features. She had just outmaneuvered a corrupt federal commander using hospital bureaucracy and sheer nerve.
Morales glared at her, realizing he had been checkedmate. He lowered his weapon with a sharp nod to his men.
"We're leaving," Morales told his squad, keeping his eyes locked on Nicolás. "Enjoy your peace while it lasts, Velasco. This isn't over."
As the tactical team backed out through the heavy iron doors, the tension in the mansion finally dissipated.
Nicolás holstered his weapon and walked over to Sofía.
"You just made an enemy of Commander Morales," Nicolás said quietly.
"I make enemies every day at the public hospital," Sofía replied, sliding the pouch back into her bag. "At least here, I get to choose them."
From the shadows of the hallway, Doña Leonor stepped out, her face pale with fury. She realized her trap had failed completely.

Nicolás turned his head slowly toward his mother.
"Mother," Nicolás said, his voice echoing in the silent foyer. "Pack your bags. You are leaving the Bosques de las Lomas estate tonight."
