Chapter 7 - Six months later

Six months later, the private airstrip in Toluca welcomed a familiar Gulfstream jet.

Nicolás Velasco descended the steps alone. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders carrying the quiet authority of a man who had successfully consolidated his empire while keeping his family safe.

He didn't go to his office. He didn't go to Bosques de las Lomas.

Instead, his black armored sedan drove directly into downtown Mexico City, stopping outside the newly inaugurated Serrano-Velasco Community Health Clinic—a state-of-the-art facility operating right in the heart of the city's poorest district.

Nicolás pushed open the glass doors. The interior was pristine, smelling of antiseptic and fresh paint, filled with families and children who finally had access to world-class medical care without emptying their pockets.

At the reception desk, Sofía looked up from her computer screen. Her eyes widened slightly as she saw him standing across the lobby.

She excused herself from a patient and walked toward him, crossing her arms over her crisp white lab coat.

"Mr. Velasco," Sofía said, her tone a mix of amusement and surprise. "If you're looking for a checkup, you're in the wrong neighborhood. The executive suites are twenty miles north."

"I don't need a checkup," Nicolás said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the surrounding chatter of the lobby fade away. "I came to inspect the clinic."

"And?" Sofía raised an eyebrow. "Does it meet your exacting standards?"

"It exceeds them," Nicolás admitted, stepping closer. "Though I noticed the director’s office is currently occupied by someone who refuses to answer her phone when I call."

"I've been busy," Sofía replied smoothly. "Saving lives, managing a facility, refusing billion-peso bribes. You know, routine nurse duties."

A genuine, soft smile broke across Nicolás’s face—a look that completely transformed his dangerous aura into something warm and human.

"Mateo asks about you," Nicolás said quietly. "Every time we FaceTime, he points at the screen and says your name."

Sofía’s heart softened. "He remembers?"

"He does." Nicolás reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box. He didn't open it; he simply placed it gently on the reception counter between them.

Sofía looked at the box, then back up at him. "What is this?"

"Not a bribe," Nicolás said softly. "And not payment. It’s an invitation."

He opened the box. Inside lay a simple, elegant platinum band inlaid with a single, flawless diamond—restrained, beautiful, and profoundly meaningful.

"Valeria and I found our peace as co-parents, and she has moved on with her life in Europe," Nicolás said, his voice steady and low. "My house has been empty of ghosts for months. But it hasn't felt like a home until now."

Sofía stared at the ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had once terrified half of Mexico, but had learned to kneel, to listen, and to love because of a poor nurse and a sick baby.
