Chapter 8 - Truth Revealed

The defense attempted a desperate last-ditch effort on the final day of testimony. Amber took the stand in her own defense, weeping profusely and claiming she was coerced and emotionally manipulated by Arthur Vance, who allegedly threatened her and promised her financial security for Lily.
However, Prosecutor Reynolds’ cross-examination was swift and merciless. He presented recorded phone calls from the county jail where Amber was heard discussing bank accounts and bad-mouthing both Caleb and me with a friend, showing zero remorse for her child’s trauma.
“Mrs. Lin,” Reynolds pressed, stepping close to the witness stand. “In these recorded calls from three weeks after your arrest, did you once ask about your daughter’s well-being or express relief that Caleb survived?”
Amber stammered, turning red. “I... I was under intense stress—”
“Answer the question, yes or no,” Reynolds demanded sternly.
“...No,” Amber whispered, hanging her head.
The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a resounding testament to the overwhelming strength of the prosecution’s case.
When the jury returned to the courtroom, the foreman stood up to read the verdicts.
“On Count One, Attempted First-Degree Murder: Guilty as charged for both defendants.”
“On Count Two, Child Endangerment: Guilty.”
“On Count Three, Conspiracy to Commit Murder: Guilty.”
“On Count Four, Fraud and illegal distribution of controlled substances: Guilty.”
Gasps and whispers filled the courtroom. Amber collapsed into her chair, sobbing hysterically as handcuffs were clicked around her wrists. Arthur Vance stared silently at the floor, his face drained of all color.
Three weeks later, the judge delivered the formal sentences. Arthur Vance received thirty years in federal prison without eligibility for parole. Amber Lin was sentenced to twenty-two years in state prison. In addition, the judge officially stripped Amber of all parental rights and issued a permanent, lifelong restraining order prohibiting either defendant from contacting Caleb or Lily ever again.
