Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The next morning dawned crisp and clear. The morning sun streamed through the blinds of the hospital room, illuminating Caleb’s pale cheeks. Around 7:00 AM, my son stirred. His eyelashes fluttered, and slowly, his brown eyes opened.

“Mommy...?” he murmured softly, his voice raspy from dehydration.

“I’m right here, my sweetheart,” I said, leaning over to kiss his forehead, tears blurring my vision. “You’re safe. Mommy’s right here.”

“My throat hurts... and I feel sleepy,” he whispered, squinting against the light.

“I know, darling. You were very sick, but the doctors fixed you up. Drink a little water.” I held a straw to his lips, and he took a few small sips before leaning back onto the pillows.

“Where’s Lily? And Aunt Amber?” Caleb asked innocently. “Aunt Amber gave me juice... it tasted yucky, like medicine. I told her I didn’t want it, but she said if I didn’t drink it all, I couldn’t play with Lily.”

My heart constricted with rage, but I kept my tone calm and gentle. “Lily is safe, sweetheart. Aunt Amber won’t be giving you any more juice. You just rest now.”

Once Caleb fell back into a peaceful, natural sleep, Detective Miller returned, accompanied by a forensic investigator. They needed a formal statement from me regarding my relationship with Amber and Arthur Vance, as well as the history of my husband Richard’s estate.

I led Miller out to the family waiting room so as not to disturb Caleb. I began unraveling the deep, twisted history that led to yesterday’s nightmare.

“My husband, Richard, passed away three years ago in a sudden car accident,” I explained, my voice steady despite the painful memories. “He left his entire estate—our family home, a commercial property, and a sizable life insurance policy—in an irrevocable trust strictly for Caleb, with me designated as the sole trustee until Caleb turns twenty-one.”

“And Arthur Vance?” Miller asked, taking detailed notes.

“Arthur was Richard’s half-brother from his mother’s second marriage. They were never close. Arthur had heavy gambling debts and a criminal record for fraud. When Richard died, Arthur claimed Richard had made a verbal agreement to give him forty percent of the estate. When the court rejected his claim, Arthur threatened that we hadn't seen the last of him.”

“And how did Amber fit into this?”

“Amber was married to Richard’s younger brother, David, who passed away five years ago. Since then, Amber constantly complained that Richard’s side of the family got everything while she was left struggling as a single mother. I tried to help her—I paid her rent multiple times, bought clothes for Lily, and even helped her secure a job. But her resentment only grew.”

Detective Miller nodded solemnly. “That aligns perfectly with what our cyber forensics unit recovered this morning from Amber’s phone.”

He pulled out a printed report from his briefcase and handed it to me. “We bypassed the encryption on her messages with Arthur Vance. It appears Arthur promised Amber a lump sum of two hundred thousand dollars if she managed to incapacitate Caleb in a way that made you look like an unfit, negligent mother.”

I gasped, reading the horrific text exchanges on the paper:

Arthur: Make sure she gets blamed. If the kid ends up in a coma or worse from her prescription meds, child protective services will remove him, and as next-of-kin, we can file for guardianship of the trust funds.

Amber: Done. I used your pills and put the bottle in her bag when she wasn't looking. Make sure you have the money ready.

A wave of nausea swept over me. The depth of their callousness was staggering. They were willing to sacrifice a seven-year-old child’s life and destroy my life completely, all for money.

“This is attempted murder and conspiracy,” I said, my voice shaking with righteous fury. “They need to spend the rest of their lives behind bars.”

“With this digital evidence and Lily’s testimony, Amber’s defense is completely shattered,” Miller assured me. “She is being formally charged today with attempted murder, child endangerment, and conspiracy. As for Arthur Vance, federal marshals and local authorities have tracked his vehicle heading north toward the border. It’s only a matter of time before we catch him.”

I looked at the detective, feeling a spark of hope amidst the horror. “Detective... what about Lily? Can I see her?”

Miller softened his expression. “She’s at the county youth shelter right now. She’s safe, but she’s scared and feels terribly guilty. She keeps asking about Caleb.”

“I want to petition for temporary custody of Lily,” I declared without hesitation. “She saved my son’s life. I won’t let her feel abandoned.”
