Chapter 1 - The Unthinkable Betrayal
My watch suddenly vibrated.
On the other end of the line, Lily’s voice was shaking.
“Aunt Sarah... please come quickly.”
“What happened, Lily?”
“It’s Caleb... he won’t wake up. Mom said it was just a joke to help him rest, but I’ve been calling him and he isn’t answering...”
My heart sank.
I rushed to Liberty Oak Park without a second thought.
As soon as I arrived, I saw Caleb lying still on the grass, his face unusually pale. A few feet away, Amber was leaning carelessly against a tree, looking at her phone as if nothing had happened.
I ran to my son.
“Amber! What happened to him?”
She simply shrugged.
“Relax. He was running around nonstop, so I gave him something to help him calm down. He just needs a nap.”
“Something... what exactly?”
Amber smiled without the slightest concern.
“I was helping you. You worry too much.”
I said nothing.
I picked up Caleb and drove straight to the hospital.

The steady sound of the heart monitor filled the room.
A detective came in with a serious expression.
“We’ve received the preliminary results.”
I clenched my hands.
“My son... is he going to be okay?”
He nodded reassuringly.
“He’s receiving intensive medical care.”
Before I could feel relieved, he continued.
“But there’s something else you need to know.”
He placed a bag of evidence on the table.
“Amber claims this bottle belongs to you. She says she was only trying to protect you.”
A bitter laugh slipped out of me.
“Even now... she’s still trying to blame me?”
The detective slowly shook his head.
“We’re not relying only on her statement.”
“Lily told us everything she witnessed.”
He paused before looking me in the eye.
“She also showed us where they threw away the empty prescription container.”
I held my breath.
“What’s surprising is that...”
