Chapter 6 - Confrontation and Discovery

The grand jury convened two months after the incident, handing down formal indictments against both Amber Lin and Arthur Vance on multiple felony counts, including attempted first-degree murder, child endangerment, conspiracy, and fraud.

Prior to the preliminary evidentiary hearing, Arthur Vance’s legal team attempted a cunning tactic. Realizing that the federal charges against Arthur were insurmountable, Arthur’s attorney reached out to Eleanor, proposing a face-to-face meeting between Arthur and myself in a controlled detention center setting. Arthur claimed he had vital information regarding hidden assets and full disclosure of Amber’s sole instigation of the poisoning in exchange for a favorable victim-impact statement from me.

Against Eleanor’s initial reservations, I decided to attend the meeting. I needed to look the man who tried to kill my son in the eye and let him know he had failed completely.

The visitation room at the county correctional facility was cold and sterile. Glass separated us, and Arthur Vance sat on the opposite side, wearing an orange jumpsuit. His eyes, once arrogant, were now shadowed with desperation and defeat.

He picked up the telephone handset. I picked up mine, keeping my posture rigid and confident.

“Sarah,” Arthur began, trying to summon a persuasive smile. “Thank you for coming. Look, this whole thing was a terrible misunderstanding. It was Amber’s idea from the start. She came to me begging for money, saying she could get you out of the picture so we could split the estate—”

“Save your lies, Arthur,” I interrupted, my voice cold as ice, cutting through his speech. “I read the text messages. I saw how you instructed her to use high doses of controlled sedatives. You didn't just want to frame me; you didn't care if my seven-year-old boy survived or not.”

Arthur’s demeanor shifted, his face twisting into a bitter scowl. “Richard should have shared that trust with me! It was family money!”

“It was never yours,” I replied calmly. “Richard earned his wealth, and he created a trust to protect his son. You are a greedy, pathetic parasite who preyed on a weak, envious woman, and now you are going to spend the rest of your life paying for it.”

“Sarah, please,” he stammered, panic seeping into his tone. “I can tell the prosecutor that Amber was the mastermind! I can give you property deeds—”

“I don’t want anything from you,” I said, looking at him with utter disdain. “Justice is already being served. Caleb is healthy, happy, and thriving. And Lily is safe with me, learning what real family means. You have lost everything.”

I hung up the receiver, stood up, and walked out without looking back. As the heavy steel doors clicked shut behind me, I felt a powerful sense of closure. The monsters no longer held any power or terror over my life.
