Chapter 9 - A Legacy Restored

The Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Baltimore was filled with white lilies and soft candle light. Representatives from every legitimate business, community organization, and family branch in the state had gathered to pay their respects to Lucia Moretti.
Dominic sat in the front pew, dressed in a sharp black suit. Beside him sat Sofia, holding a small blanket, and next to her sat Claire, holding Gabriel safely in her arms.
The priest’s voice echoed gently off the high vaulted ceilings, offering prayers of peace, remembrance, and rebirth.
When the service concluded, Dominic stood up and walked to the altar. He turned to face the congregation, his expression calm, noble, and commanding.
"Lucia was the heart of our family," Dominic spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the silent church. "Her loss was a tragedy that nearly tore my world apart. But her love left behind a legacy—a life that refused to be extinguished."
He looked directly at Claire, his gaze filled with open gratitude.
"There were those who sought to use grief to tear us down, who believed that strength lies in cruelty and deceit," Dominic continued. "They were wrong. The Moretti family will no longer walk in the shadows of the past. From this day forward, our foundation will build, protect, and heal. We owe our future to those who stand for truth, no matter the cost."
The congregation remained spellbound as Dominic walked down the altar steps, stopping directly in front of Claire. He reached down and gently placed his hand over Gabriel's head, bestowing a father’s blessing in front of all assembled.
Later that evening, a quiet gathering was held at the estate’s seaside gardens. The sun was setting over the bay, casting gold and crimson light across the calm water.
Uncle Frank approached Dominic, holding two glasses of wine. "The capos have accepted the restructuring, Dominic. The illegal rackets are being phased out or sold off entirely. We are transitioning all assets into legitimate shipping, construction, and pediatric medical charities."
"Good," Dominic said, taking a glass. "I want a clean world for my son."
Frank looked over at the garden bench, where Sofia and Claire were sitting together, watching Gabriel sleep peacefully in his stroller.
"She’s a remarkable woman, Dominic," Frank said softly. "Lucia would have loved her."

Dominic watched Claire laugh at something Sofia said, the evening breeze lifting her golden hair. A deep sense of peace settled into his heart—a feeling he thought he had lost forever on the day of the explosion.
"Yes," Dominic said quietly. "She truly is."
