Chapter 10 - The Sunrise at Chesapeake

One year later.
The morning sun rose over the Chesapeake Bay, painting the sky in brilliant hues of rose, gold, and orange. The soft crashing of waves against the cliffs provided a gentle rhythm to the quiet morning.
On the wide back patio of the Moretti estate, a small wooden highchair sat near a breakfast table spread with fresh fruit, pastries, and coffee.
A chubby, energetic one-year-old toddler with dark, unruly curls and bright blue eyes was happily mashing a piece of banana onto his tray, letting out joyous squeals.
"Gabriel, stop painting the table with your breakfast," Claire laughed, stepping out through the French doors carrying a napkin. She wore a simple white summer dress, her hair loose around her shoulders, glowing in the early light.
Gabriel giggled, holding out his tiny hands to her. "Mama!" he babbled happily.
Claire froze for a fraction of a second, her heart melting completely. She leaned down, kissing the top of his head, wiping his hands clean. "You sweet boy."
"Did I hear him say what I think he said?" a deep voice asked from the doorway.
Dominic walked out onto the patio, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt and dark trousers. He looked younger, healthier, the dark circles beneath his eyes long gone, replaced by a deep warmth and quiet authority.
He walked over to Claire, placing his arms around her waist from behind and pulling her gently against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, looking down at their son.
"He calls you Mama because that’s what you are to him," Dominic whispered softly against her neck. "And what you are to me."
Claire turned in his arms, resting her hands against his chest, looking up into his dark, loving eyes. "We've come a long way from the NICU, Mr. Moretti."
"We have," Dominic smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat.
Dominic stepped back slightly, taking her hand in his. He opened the box, revealing a stunning platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless diamond that captured the golden morning light.
"One year ago, you walked into a hospital room and saved my life by saving my son," Dominic said, his voice thick with deep, unwavering devotion. "You brought truth where there was deceit, hope where there was despair, and love where there was only grief. You gave me a family again."
He looked directly into her eyes, his heart entirely open.
"Claire Bennett, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and making this family whole forever?"
Tears of pure happiness filled Claire’s eyes as she smiled, her heart brimming with love for the man standing before her.
"Yes, Dominic," Claire whispered softly. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss. Gabriel clapped his little hands together from his highchair, letting out another loud, joyous laugh that echoed across the sunny patio.
Far below, the dark waters of the harbor sparkled in the clear morning light. The shadows of the past were gone, replaced by the brilliant, unbroken promise of a bright new day.
