Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky over Baltimore a crisp, clear blue. The city went on about its business, entirely unaware of the silent storm that had swept through its underbelly.

In the dark, stone-walled wine cellar of the Moretti estate, Anthony sat huddled in a corner, his clothes ruined, his face pale from terror and isolation. The heavy steel door unlocked with a loud, metallic clunk, swinging open to reveal the imposing silhouette of Uncle Frank—the oldest living elder of the Moretti family.

Behind Frank stood two senior capos who had served Dominic’s father decades ago.

Anthony scrambled to his feet, his hands trembling. "Uncle Frank! Thank God! You have to talk to Dominic! He's gone mad! He locked me in here!"

Uncle Frank looked at his nephew with a look of profound disgust and sorrow. He didn't step into the room; he merely stood in the doorway, holding a thick leather bound book—the historical ledger of the Moretti family lineage.

"Dominic isn't mad, Anthony," Uncle Frank said slowly, his deep voice echoing off the stone walls. "Dominic is a father who brought his son home."

Anthony gasped, stepping back against the wall. "The... the baby survived?"

"Gabriel is resting comfortably in the master suite," Frank continued coldly. "And Dr. Marcus Hale has given a full, signed confession to the elders regarding your financial transactions and your instructions to let an innocent child die in that hospital."

"Uncle Frank, please!" Anthony pleaded, dropping to his knees. "I did it for the family! Dominic was weak! He was letting the business fall apart after Lucia died!"

"Dominic was grieving his wife," Frank snapped, his voice hard as iron. "While you were plotting treason against your own blood. You broke the most sacred rule of this family. You targeted a child."

Frank signaled to the two capos behind him. They stepped into the room, their faces emotionless.

"Where are you taking me?" Anthony shrieked as they grabbed him by the arms, dragging him toward the rear exit that led down to the private docks. "Uncle Frank! Dom! Please! I'm blood!"

"Blood doesn't save a traitor," Frank said quietly, turning his back as the heavy doors closed behind them.

An hour later, Dominic sat in his private study on the second floor of the estate. The room was bathed in afternoon sunlight streaming through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows. On his desk lay the sign-over papers for Mercy Crown Hospital's security board, along with the complete termination of Dr. Hale's medical license and criminal indictments prepared for the corrupt administrators.

The door to the study opened quietly. Claire stepped inside, carrying a small clipboard. She wore simple civilian clothes—a soft cream sweater and dark jeans—looking relaxed for the first time since this nightmare had begun.

"How is he?" Dominic asked immediately, standing up from his desk.

"He just finished a four-ounce bottle and went right back to sleep," Claire smiled, walking over to the desk. "His weight is up three hundred grams. Dr. Vance says his progress is nothing short of miraculous."

Dominic let out a breath, a genuine smile touching his lips. "That's because of you."

Claire blushed slightly, looking down at her clipboard. "I was just doing my job, Dominic."

"No," Dominic said, stepping around the desk until he stood directly in front of her. "Doctors do their jobs. Nurses do their jobs. What you did was look beyond the surface when everyone else was content to let my son die. You risked your life, your career, and your safety for a child who wasn't yours."

He reached out, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "I can never repay that debt, Claire. But I promise you, as long as I draw breath, you and your family will never want for anything. You are under the protection of this family forever."

Claire looked up into his dark eyes, seeing no longer the terrifying mafia boss, but a man of profound integrity, honor, and deep devotion to those he cared about.

"I don't want protection or money, Dominic," Claire said softly. "I just wanted to see that baby back in his father's arms."

"You did," Dominic whispered. "You gave me my life back."
