Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Unveiled

The Moretti estate, perched high on the cliffs overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, was shrouded in a heavy night fog. Inside the grand dining hall, crystal chandeliers cast long, sharp shadows across the polished oak table. Anthony Moretti sat at the head of the table, sipping a glass of aged scotch, surrounded by three of his trusted lieutenants.

"Dominic is losing his mind," Anthony said smoothly, swirling the dark amber liquid in his glass. "The doctor says the baby won't last another forty-eight hours. Once the child is gone, Dominic will surrender the reins. He has no heart left for the business."

One of the lieutenants, a heavy-set man named Marco, frowned. "And if he doesn't step down willingly, Anthony? He still controls the syndicate's bank accounts."

"A grieving man makes mistakes," Anthony replied with a cruel smile. "A grieving man forgets to check his armor. When the time comes, the transition will be seamless. The capos already agree that we can't have a leader who spends his days crying over an incubator."

The heavy double doors of the dining hall suddenly burst open, slamming against the walls with a thunderous bang.

Anthony jumped up, spilling his scotch across the white linen tablecloth.

Dominic walked into the room. He wore a heavy black overcoat, his dark hair pulled back, his face devoid of any emotion. Behind him stood six heavily armed men, their weapons drawn and trained directly on Anthony’s lieutenants. Beside Dominic walked Claire, holding a leather medical bag, her jaw set with newfound determination.

"Dom!" Anthony gasped, forcing a nervous chuckle as he backed away slightly. "What is the meaning of this? Why are your men pointing guns at us?"

"Sit down, Anthony," Dominic said softly.

The command carried the weight of an execution order. The lieutenants slowly put their hands on the table and sat back down, terrified to move a muscle. Anthony remained standing, his face twitching.

"Dom, you're not in your right mind," Anthony stammered, pointing a finger at Claire. "Who is this woman? Why are you bringing hospital staff into our family home?"

"This is Claire Bennett," Dominic said, stepping up to the table. "She’s the nurse who saved my son’s life."

Anthony froze. "Saved... saved his life? I thought the doctors said he was dying..."

"The baby in the hospital is dying," Claire spoke up, her clear voice ringing through the silent hall. "Because he was suffering from end-stage congenital renal failure before he was ever placed in that incubator. But he isn't Gabriel Moretti."

Anthony’s eyes darted frantically around the room. "What kind of madness is this? Dom, she's confusing you! She's making things up!"

Dominic reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick envelope, and tossed it onto the table. It slid across the wood, stopping right in front of Anthony's glass.

"Those are the financial transfers," Dominic said quietly. "Traced from your offshore account in Grand Cayman to Dr. Marcus Hale's private shell company over the last three weeks. Two million dollars, Anthony. A very generous payment for swapping an infant."

Anthony swallowed hard. His arrogant demeanor collapsed entirely, replaced by raw, frantic terror. "Dom... listen to me..."

"Where is my son?" Dominic demanded, leaning across the table until his face was inches from Anthony's. "Where is Gabriel?"

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Anthony shrieked.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster and shot Marco directly through the right shoulder. The gunshot was a muted thwack, followed immediately by Marco’s agonizing scream as he collapsed off his chair onto the oriental rug. The other lieutenants ducked, covering their heads, completely paralyzed by fear.

Claire gasped, stepping back, but she forced herself to keep her eyes open. She had to stay strong.

"The next bullet goes between your eyes, Anthony," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he aimed the gun directly at his cousin's forehead. "You have five seconds to tell me where my child is. Five."

"In the old warehouse!" Anthony screamed, dropping to his knees and clasping his hands together in desperate plea. "The abandoned textile factory on Pier 4! He's there! He's alive, I swear to God he's alive! I had a private nanny keeping him hidden until... until it was over!"

Dominic stared at his cousin, the gun barrel perfectly still. "Why?"

"Because you had everything!" Anthony sobbed, breaking down completely. "Uncle Vito left you the empire! Lucia loved you! You were going to have an heir who would lock me out of the family business forever! I deserved a piece of this life, Dom! I deserved respect!"

"Respect is earned through loyalty," Dominic whispered softly. "Not by stealing a helpless child."

Dominic lowered the gun slightly, looking at his head bodyguard. "Lock Anthony in the wine cellar. Reinforce the doors. If we don't return with Gabriel within two hours... kill him."

"Dominic, please!" Anthony begged as he was dragged away, his boots scraping against the hardwood floor. "Dom!"

Dominic turned to Claire, his dark eyes filled with urgency. "Pier 4. We go now."

Claire grabbed her medical bag tighter, her heart pounding. "I'm coming with you. If Gabriel has been kept in a warehouse for nineteen days without proper NICU equipment, he’s going to need immediate medical stabilization."

Dominic looked at her, a profound sense of respect shining through his dark gaze. "Let's go get my son."
