Chapter 9 - Fresh Horizons

Lily's freshman year ended with remarkable success. She earned a 3.9 GPA, made the dean's list, and secured a prestigious summer internship at an architectural firm in downtown Columbus.
The dark blue Mustang GT had become a familiar, beloved sight on campus. It wasn't just a vehicle; it was a badge of honor, representing a father's unwavering protection and a young woman's resilience.
To celebrate the end of her exams, I drove up to campus to bring her home for the summer. As I stood outside her dorm building, I saw her walking toward me, her arms full of books, laughing with a group of friends. She looked confident, radiance beaming from her face, completely transformed from the tear-stained girl who had stood in her grandmother's driveway a year ago.
"Dad!" she called out, running over to give me a warm hug.
"Look at you, college sophomore," I teased. "Ready to head home?"
"Definitely," she said, tossing her bag into the trunk of the Mustang. "Though I think I'm driving this time."
"Keys are yours," I smiled, sliding into the passenger seat.
As we drove down the highway toward home, the sun setting in a brilliant display of orange and gold across the Ohio sky, she looked over at me with deep gratitude.
"You know, Dad," she said as the V8 engine purred smoothly underneath us. "That day felt like the worst day of my life when Grandma handed me that fifteen-dollar clearance bracelet. But it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to us."

"Why do you say that?" I asked.
"Because the truth finally came out," she said softly. "We left all the toxicity behind, and we built something real."
