Chapter 7 - Restitution and Truth

Six months passed. The waves of drama that had once threatened to consume our lives had settled into a quiet, peaceful rhythm.
Evelyn had moved into a small, modest apartment on the outskirts of town, funded entirely by the modest remnants of her remaining savings after paying back the court-ordered restitution. Without her large house to hold court in, her influence over the extended family vanished completely.
Relatives who had once turned a blind eye to her cruel behavior began visiting us instead, offering sincere apologies to Lily for sitting quietly at that fateful birthday party. Aunt Sarah, my late father's younger sister, came over one Sunday afternoon with baked goods and a heartfelt letter.
"We were all afraid of your mother's tongue for so long, Daniel," Sarah admitted tears in her eyes as we sat on the porch. "We knew she favored Denise, but we never imagined she would cross a line like that. What you did for Lily... it woke all of us up."
"It wasn't just about the car or the money, Sarah," I said gently. "It was about letting Lily know that she matters, that she isn't second best to anyone."

Meanwhile, Denise was struggling to keep up with her probation requirements and the financial fallout of her actions. Without her mother's financial backing, she was forced to take a second job to pay off her debts. The illusion of luxury and status she had spent years building had completely evaporated.
In a strange turn of events, Brianna began working part-time at a local bookstore to pay for her own community college tuition. The ordeal had forced her to grow up quickly, breaking the cycle of entitlement that my mother and Denise had instilled in her.
