Chapter 6 - High Octane Freedom

By late August, the morning fog hung low over the highway as Lily packed the trunk of her dark blue Mustang GT. The car sparkled under the morning sun, a symbol of hard-earned triumph over toxicity. Today was the day she was leaving for Ohio State University.

I reached into my pocket and handed her an envelope. She looked at me, puzzled. "What's this?"
"Gas gift cards for the entire year," I said with a grin. "That V8 engine isn't known for being eco-friendly, and I don't want you worrying about gas money while you're getting straight A's."

"I will always stand up for you, Lily," I told her, my voice thick with emotion. "Your grandfather would be so proud of the woman you've become."
She got into the driver's seat, adjusted her mirrors, and started the engine. The rich, muscular exhaust tone echoed through our quiet neighborhood. She rolled down the window, gave me a bright wave, and pulled out onto the main road. I watched her disappear down the street, knowing that her future was completely her own to write.
