Chapter 6 - Healing the Foundation

The storm clouds parted entirely by mid-morning, allowing brilliant rays of sunlight to flood the sprawling courtyards of the Romano estate.
Inside the grand dining hall, a massive mahogany table was set for breakfast, though no one was particularly hungry. The revelation of the past twenty-four hours had shaken the household to its core, but beneath the shock lay a profound sense of cleansing.
Leo sat at the head of the table, cutting pancakes for his newly recovered son, who now sat beside him, safely wrapped in a comfortable sweater bearing the family crest. The boy—named Alexander after Leo’s own father—was quiet, taking in the grand paintings on the walls and the crystal chandeliers overhead with wide, curious eyes.
Clara stood nearby, holding a silver tray with fresh coffee, though Leo had insisted multiple times that she sit down as an honored guest.
"Clara," Leo said, pouring a cup of coffee. "For ten years, you protected this estate from the shadows. You kept my household running while deceit was rotting it from the inside out. Starting today, your title is no longer head housemaid. You are the Director of Estate Operations. Your salary will be multiplied by ten, and your family's future is secured for generations."
Clara pressed a napkin to her eyes, her voice trembling. "Thank you, Mr. Romano. I only wanted justice for my sister... and a safe home for the children."
"You found both," Leo replied gently.
At that moment, the heavy doors opened, and Victor walked in, carrying a thick portfolio stamped with legal seals.
"The paperwork is finalized, cousin," Victor reported, taking a seat across from Leo. "Isabella’s assets have been completely frozen and transferred into a sovereign trust controlled exclusively by you and Alexander. Her co-conspirators in the hospital administration have been handed over to federal prosecutors. As for the child she planted..."
Leo looked up. "What happened to him?"
"Child protective services and our family physicians have placed him with a secure, loving foster family," Victor said softly. "The boy is innocent in all of this. He shouldn't suffer for his mother's crimes."
"Agreed," Leo nodded. "Ensure his living expenses are covered anonymously until he turns eighteen. No child should pay for the sins of ambitious adults."
Across the table, little Willow was examining a brand-new leather-bound notebook and a set of professional sketching pencils that Leo had ordered for her first reward installment. A golden retriever puppy was currently sleeping soundly at her feet, a gift from the estate kennels.

Alexander pointed at the puppy, letting out a cheerful giggle. Willow smiled back, sliding a piece of fruit across the table to him.
Leo watched them interact, feeling a warmth in his chest he hadn't felt since before the dark days of isolation and deceit. The throne of Romano Holdings was secure, not because of ruthless power or forged documents, but because truth, loyalty, and a brave little girl had shattered the illusion.
