Chapter 4 - The St. Jude Sanctuary

The St. Jude Sanctuary for Children stood on the bleak eastern edge of the city, a sprawling brick building surrounded by overgrown ivy and iron gates. Unlike the opulent maternity wing of St. Cecilia’s, this institution smelled of floor wax, old books, and damp wool.
It was 2:00 AM when the convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the main entrance.
Leo stepped out into the chilly night air, his eyes fixed on the illuminated cross above the chapel doors. Victor and four elite guards flanked him, their boots crunching on the gravel driveway.
The heavy oak doors were bolted from the inside, but a single swift kick from Victor shattered the antique iron latch, sending the doors swinging wide open.
An elderly night watchman rushed down the hallway with a flashlight, blinking sleepily in the sudden intrusion. "Hey! You can't just—Mr. Romano?" The man’s jaw dropped as he recognized the billionaire standing in the foyer.
"Open the intake logs for November third, four years ago," Leo demanded, flashing his diamond signet ring to establish undeniable authority.
"Yes, sir! Right this way, sir!" the watchman stammered, leading them down a dimly lit corridor toward the administrative office.
Flipping through the heavy leather-bound ledger, the watchman’s trembling finger pointed down a row of archived entries.
"Here, sir. November fourth... late night drop-off. A healthy infant boy brought in by an anonymous donor with a substantial cash endowment. The file code is V-409."
"Where is he now?" Leo asked, his heart hammering against his ribs in a way it hadn't in decades.
"Well, sir... standard protocol for anonymous infant endowments with sufficient trust funding is placement with a vetted foster family after two years, unless reclaimed," the watchman explained, turning another page. "The child was adopted by a quiet, hardworking family on the north side. The Bennett family."
Leo froze.
The name echoed through the empty hallway like a gunshot.
Bennett.
"Clara Bennett's family?" Leo whispered, turning to Victor in stunned realization.
"The very same," the watchman nodded, unaware of the massive storm brewing in the room. "Clara’s sister—God rest her soul—took the boy in after her own husband passed away, raising him alongside her own daughter, Willow."
Leo closed his eyes. The terrifying, beautiful tapestry of fate snapped into sharp focus.
The maid who had served his household for ten years. The little girl who had hidden the wooden box in the attic. The child they had raised as their own cousin, who was actually the true heir to the Romano empire, discarded by Isabella to make room for her own puppet.

And most importantly: the boy currently sleeping in the Romano estate nursery wasn't just a random infant—he was the biological child of Isabella’s closest co-conspirator, planted to secure her grip on the throne.
"Victor," Leo said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound redemption. "Get the car ready. We're going to bring our true heir home."
