Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Upstairs, the gala was reaching its peak. Champagne glasses clinked, classical string quartets played softly from the terrace, and Victoria Vance was holding court near the grand fireplace in the drawing-room, recounting a fabricated anecdote about her mother-in-law’s supposed adventures in Europe.

“She sent me a postcard just last week from Zurich,” Victoria lied smoothly to a group of enthralled local bankers. “She’s planning to tour the castles next. Honestly, at her age, I worry about her energy, but she insists on living life to the fullest.”

At that exact moment, down in the basement, Alex carefully laid his mother on a clean cot in the estate’s secure storm shelter room, wrapping her in a thermal emergency blanket and feeding her sips of clean electrolytes from his tactical canteen.

“Rest, Mom,” Alex instructed gently, his tone firm and reassuring. “I need to take care of some administrative business upstairs. Stay here. Do not open this door for anyone except me.”

Beatrice grabbed his wrist, her eyes wide with lingering terror. “Alex, be careful. She has men… guards everywhere. They’re dangerous.”

“Mom,” Alex smiled, a chilling, humorless curve of his lips that held zero warmth. “Compared to the warlords I’ve hunted across three continents, Victoria’s rented security guards are amateur hour at a birthday party.”

Alex turned away, walking back out into the dimly lit corridor. He reached into his duffel bag and pulled out a heavy, matte-black tactical tactical vest, slipping it over his broad chest. He secured a communications earpiece in his left ear and checked the magazine of his sidearm.

He didn't plan on firing a shot if he didn't have to; the psychological destruction of Victoria Vance was going to be far more thorough, precise, and devastating than any kinetic engagement.

He walked up the basement stairs with slow, measured footsteps, heading directly toward the bright, glittering lights of the drawing-room where the elite of San Miguel were drinking champagne to celebrate a lie.
