Chapter 2 - The Echo of Iron

Beatrice Vance, once a towering matriarch of local philanthropy and sharp business acumen, was now reduced to a gaunt shadow of her former self. Her silver hair, once meticulously styled, hung in dull, tangled strands around a face deeply etched with the lines of starvation and unrelenting psychological torture.

The heavy steel cage, custom-welded by a corrupt contractor whom Victoria had paid off with corporate funds, stood five feet high and four feet wide. It was bolted directly into the concrete foundation of the estate’s old utility cellar beneath the terrace. The rusted iron bars groaned softly whenever Beatrice shifted her weight on the damp, cold floor.

“Nobody’s coming to save you, Beatrice,” Victoria mocked, her voice dripping with a sickening, melodic cruelty as she crouched down slightly to meet the older woman’s terrified eyes. “Julian is in Zurich closing a multi-million-dollar acquisition. He thinks you are sipping herbal tea at a Swiss spa in Geneva. Your friends think you’ve lost your mind and retired to a private sanatorium. As for the law? Well, the law requires a body or a complaint. And who is going to file one? You?”

Beatrice’s cracked lips parted. Her voice, raspy and weakened from days without adequate water, barely rose above a whisper. “Julian… my son… he will find out. He always knows when something is wrong.”

“Julian doesn't know anything that I don't feed him through a curated email address,” Victoria laughed, taking a slow sip of her champagne. “Every month, a polite, beautifully phrased message goes out to him, written in your exact linguistic style, detailing your lovely mountain walks and your meditation classes. He replies with a cheerful heart emoji and continues making us richer. By the time he returns next year, you’ll have quietly passed away from natural causes, age-related decline. The estate will be entirely mine. Every last share, every property deed, every cent.”

“You are a monster, Victoria,” Beatrice breathed, clutching her thin, dirt-stained woolen shawl tighter around her shivering shoulders.

“I am a survivor,” Victoria corrected sharply, her eyes flashing with sudden, venomous coldness. She reached through the bars, her manicured fingernails lightly tapping against Beatrice’s hollow cheek. “And you were an obstacle. A stubborn, outdated relic standing between me and the complete control of the Vance dynasty. Now, finish your water. I have guests arriving for a charity gala in an hour, and I need this courtyard looking pristine.”

Victoria stood up, smoothing the front of her scarlet gown with immaculate grace. She turned her back on the cage, completely unaware that a few yards away, hidden in the dense canopy of the ancient oak trees bordering the estate, a pair of cold, tactical eyes were recording her every movement through advanced thermal optics.
