Chapter 5 - The Descent into the Crypt

The heavy wooden basement door was secured by a digital keypad lock. Alex paused in front of it, pulling a small, sleek electronic decoding device from his tactical pouch. With practiced, lightning-fast movements, he connected the device to the interface port.
Within three seconds, the green light flashed. The magnetic lock clicked open with a soft, muffled pop.
Alex pulled the door open and stepped inside, plunging immediately into total darkness. He flicked on a red-filtered tactical flashlight, casting a narrow beam of crimson light down the stone steps that led into the underground cellar.
The air grew damp and smelled heavily of rusted iron, damp earth, and old concrete. Every step Alex took down the stairs echoed like a muffled heartbeat in his ears.
As he reached the bottom of the landing, the red beam swept across the far corner of the subterranean room. There, half-shrouded in the gloom, sat the reinforced steel cage.
“Alex?” a weak, trembling voice cried out from the darkness.
Alex froze. The red light shifted, illuminating the cage and the frail, broken figure huddled inside. In a fraction of a second, all the calculated coldness in Alex’s chest dissolved, replaced by a searing, protective fury. He rushed forward, dropping his duffel bag to the floor with a heavy thud.
“Mom,” he whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he gripped the cold iron bars. He reached his large, calloused hands through the gap, gently cupping his mother’s gaunt face. “I’m here. I’m right here. You’re safe now.”
Beatrice clutched his hands desperately, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. “Alex… oh, thank God… she said no one was coming… she said—”

“She lied,” Alex interrupted fiercely, his eyes burning with intense determination. He pulled a heavy set of hydraulic bolt cutters from his tactical pack. “Nobody keeps my mother in a cage and gets away with it.”
With two swift, powerful snaps of the industrial tool, the heavy steel padlock securing the cage door shattered into pieces. Alex swung the iron door wide open, gently lifting his mother out of the cold enclosure into his strong, steady arms.
