Chapter 9 - Dawn Over Chicago

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and pale violet. The air was crisp, clean, washed completely free of the city's usual smog by the torrential rains of the night before.
Inside the master suite of the Cross estate, Nora stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, rocking Wren gently in her arms. The baby was smiling, cooing softly as she reached out to catch the morning light filtering through the glass.
The heavy oak door clicked open.
Nora spun around, her heart leaping into her throat.
Stellan walked into the room. He had changed into a fresh white shirt, though the sleeves were still rolled up, and his hair was slightly damp from the morning air. There was a fresh, faint scratch along his jawline — the only physical evidence of the violent war he had waged and won hours earlier.
He stopped a few feet away, his winter-concrete eyes softening the moment they landed on Wren.
"It's over," Stellan said quietly. "Vance is gone. The syndicate has fallen in line. Nobody will ever threaten either of you again."
Nora let out a long, ragged breath, tears of pure relief spilling over her lashes. The crushing weight that had lived in her chest for twelve long months finally evaporated.
"You're safe," she whispered, looking down at Wren, though her words were meant for both of them.
Stellan took a step closer. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing against Nora's cheek, wiping away an escaping tear with a tenderness that defied every rumor whispered about him across the city.
"You kept her safe when the whole world wanted her dead," Stellan murmured, his voice thick with a profound, unshakable reverence. "You risked everything for my blood, Nora. That makes you more than staff. More than a guest."
Nora looked up into his eyes, finding no coldness there anymore — only a deep, enduring warmth that felt like home.
"What are we, Stellan?" she asked softly.
May you like
Stellan smiled — a genuine, complete smile that transformed his severe face entirely. He reached out with his other arm, pulling both Nora and Wren into his embrace, wrapping them in a fortress of strength and unconditional protection.
"We're a family," he said against her hair. "And nobody is ever breaking this house again."
