Chapter 3 - The Unseen Tides

The following week passed in a tense, surreal blur.

Nora kept her head down, strictly adhering to her chores, terrified that Stellan's leniency was a one-time anomaly that wouldn't survive a second infraction. True to his word, Mrs. Aldridge had set up a small playpen in the back corner of the linen room, allowing Nora to keep an eye on Wren while she folded sheets and sorted uniforms.

Yet, the estate felt different.

The other maids whispered behind their hands during lunch breaks. Rumors rippled through the staff like wildfire. The Boss checked on the maid's kid. He walked through the east wing carrying a baby bottle. In a house where laughter was practically illegal and happiness was treated as a structural weakness, the mere existence of Wren was an earthquake.

On Thursday afternoon, Nora was carrying a basket of freshly pressed table linens down the grand staircase when she heard raised voices echoing from the study.

She froze, instinctively pulling back toward the shadow of a marble pillar.

"You're losing your edge, Stellan," a harsh, grating voice barked. It belonged to Marcus Vance, the head of the North Side syndicate and one of Cross's most volatile business partners. "Word on the street is you've turned your estate into a fucking daycare. Since when do stray maids and their bastards dictate the atmosphere at headquarters?"

Nora's breath caught in her throat. Her knuckles turned white against the wicker basket.

Stellan's voice, when it came, was dangerously low. It carried across the open foyer with the chilling clarity of a falling icicle.

"My estate, Marcus, is my business," Stellan replied smoothly. "What happens within these walls is none of yours. If you have concerns about our port alignment, state them. If you are here to comment on my household management, consider this your only warning before I throw you out of that window."

A heavy silence followed. Marcus scoffed, a nervous edge cracking his bravado. "Just... keep your eye on the ball, Cross. The Outfit doesn't need distractions right now. Especially not ones of unknown origin."

Heavy footsteps slammed across the marble as Marcus stormed out, brushing past Nora's pillar without sparing her a glance.

Nora slumped against the cold stone, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was a liability. Marcus Vance was dangerous, and if he or any of Stellan's enemies realized how much attention the boss was paying to her and Wren, they would use the baby as a weapon.

That evening, after finishing her shift, Nora packed her meager belongings into her tote bag. She couldn't stay here. The risk was too high. She would take Wren, sleep at the 24-hour diner downtown if she had to, and figure something out tomorrow.

She slipped out the back service entrance just as a heavy fog rolled in off the lake.

She had barely made it fifty yards down the gravel drive when a long, black sedan idled out from the shadows, blocking her path. The rear window rolled down with a soft mechanical hum, revealing Stellan Cross's severe profile in the dim dashboard light.

"Where do you think you're going with my daughter's favorite distraction?" Stellan asked, his eyes locking onto hers.

Nora stopped dead, the rain dampening her hair. "I'm leaving, Mr. Cross. It's... it's not safe here for us. Men like Marcus Vance—"

"Men like Marcus Vance are already dead men; they just don't know it yet," Stellan interrupted, opening the car door and stepping out into the drizzle. He didn't use an umbrella. He walked straight toward her, the rain gleaming on his dark wool coat. "Get back inside, Nora. That's an order."

"I can't live under a microscope, waiting for someone to target Wren just to get to you!" Nora cried, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks.

Stellan stopped inches from her. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. He reached out, his gloved hand gently catching her chin, forcing her to look up at him.

"Nobody touches what is inside my gates," Stellan said, his voice dropping to a fierce, low register that brooked no argument. "Nobody. Now, turn around, or I will carry both of you back inside myself."
