Chapter 10 - The Legacy of the Cross

Three years later...
The sprawling lawns of the Cross estate were alive with the bright, joyful sound of children's laughter.
A little girl with bright, inquisitive dark blue eyes and curls dancing around her face chased a golden retriever across the manicured emerald grass, shrieking with delight as she clutched a colorful plastic pinwheel in her hand.
From the shaded veranda, Stellan Cross leaned against the white balustrade, a cup of black coffee in one hand, watching her with a soft, quiet amusement that would have shocked anyone who knew him back when the city whispered his name in terror.
A pair of warm arms wrapped around his waist from behind, and a soft chin rested comfortably against his shoulder.
"If you let her feed the dog another croissant, Mrs. Aldridge is going to have a heart attack," Nora said, smiling as she rested her cheek against his back.
Stellan turned in her embrace, his arms naturally finding their way around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
"Let her," Stellan murmured, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "The dog needs to learn who runs this household anyway. Besides, Wren has her mother's stubbornness; she won't take 'no' for an answer."
Nora laughed, leaning back to look up at him. The man who was once feared as the merciless shadow of Chicago now wore soft linen shirts, laughed easily at dinner, and spent his weekends building wooden dollhouses in the estate's sprawling conservatory.
Out on the lawn, little Wren suddenly stopped running, turned around, and spotted them on the veranda.
Her face lit up with a brilliant, infectious smile.
"Daddy! Mama! Come play!" she shouted, waving her pinwheel frantically in the air.
Stellan looked down at Nora, his eyes shining with a profound, unbreakable peace. The darkness of the past was gone, buried beneath the bright, defiant light of a new generation.

"Come on, Mrs. Cross," Stellan said softly, taking her hand in his. "Our daughter is giving us an order."
Together, hand in hand, they stepped out into the brilliant Chicago sunshine, leaving the shadows far behind them where they belonged.
