Chapter 7 - The Alliance of Blood

The realization hung in the sterile air like a thunderhead waiting to break.

Stellan stood frozen for a long moment, holding the baby against his chest as if she were the only real thing left in a world built on deceit and violence. The cold, impenetrable fortress of his persona had completely fractured, revealing the deep, jagged scars of a man who had lost a brother, a sister-in-law, and a family he never knew he had a chance to protect.

He turned around, his eyes locking onto Nora with a fierce, protective intensity that left no room for doubt.

"Pack your things," Stellan said, his voice returning to its absolute, commanding register, though the harshness was entirely gone.

Nora blinked through her tears, startled. "Pack? Where... where are we going?"

"Not 'we'," Stellan corrected gently. "You and Wren are moving into the primary master wing on the top floor. Starting tonight, you are no longer a maid in this house, Nora. You are under my direct protection as family."

"Stellan, you can't just—"

"Marcus Vance has spent a year hunting a ghost," Stellan interrupted, his jaw tightening into a line of pure steel. "He thought he wiped out every last branch of the Cross family tree. When he finds out that my brother's child survived — and that she has been living under his nose inside my own estate — he will make a move. And I need to be ready for him."

The reality of the threat crashed over Nora. "He'll try to kill her. He'll try to kill us both."

"Let him try," Stellan murmured softly, pressing a gentle, awkward kiss to the top of Wren's dark curls — a gesture so tender it looked foreign on a mafia boss. "Marcus has signed his own death warrant. He just hasn't realized it yet."

By evening, Nora and Wren were relocated to a suite of rooms fit for royalty at the end of the east wing. Bulletproof glass lined the tall windows, and a dedicated security detail was stationed discreetly outside the double doors. Yet, despite the fortress-like security, the room felt warm, safe, and alive for the first time in years.

That night, there was a soft knock on Nora's door.

She opened it to find Stellan standing in the hallway, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger.

"Can I come in?" he asked quietly.

Nora stepped aside, letting him enter. He walked over to the crib where Wren was sleeping soundly, standing guard over her like a sentinel.

"Victor intercepted an encrypted comms transmission from Vance's headquarters an hour ago," Stellan said without turning around. "They've caught wind of hospital inquiries regarding St. Jude's. Vance is assembling his inner circle for a summit at his warehouse downtown tomorrow night. He suspects a leak."

"Are you going?" Nora asked, her heart racing.

"I am," Stellan replied, turning to face her. His eyes were cold, sharp, and utterly merciless. "I'm going to finish this. Once and for all. But before I leave, I wanted to ensure something is clear."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, ornate silver key, placing it gently into Nora's palm.

"This opens the secure vault in my study," Stellan said, his gaze holding hers with intense gravity. "If anything happens to me tomorrow night — if Vance somehow manages the impossible — everything I own, every account, every safe house, legally transfers to you and Wren. You will be untouchable."

May you like

Nora stared at the key, then up at his face, her breath catching. "Stellan, no. Don't talk like that. You have to come back."

"I always come back," Stellan said, a faint, rare ghost of a smile touching the corner of his lips. He turned toward the door. "Lock it behind me, Nora. I'll see you tomorrow."
