Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The peaceful bubble inside the Sterling estate shattered overnight. The Valenti family, a ruthless rival syndicate seeking to expand their drug trade into Josiah’s territory, had launched a full-scale violent push. Threats were delivered, supply lines were severed, and tension hung over the city like a suffocating blanket of smoke.

The estate was placed on maximum lockdown. Guards in tactical gear replaced the discreet suits. Security protocols doubled. Mia, sensing the tension, grew anxious once more, but Willow remained her steady anchor, keeping her busy with art, music, and home lessons inside the safest inner wing of the mansion.

Josiah was rarely seen during the day. He worked round-the-clock from his underground command center, orchestrating tactical responses to neutralize the Valenti threat. Yet, every single night, no matter how late or how dangerous the situation was, he would slip quietly into Willow's quarters for a few precious minutes.

He wouldn't say much. He would simply sit on the edge of her sofa, close his eyes, and allow the quiet scent of lavender and Willow's soothing presence to wash away the violence of his day. Willow would pour him tea, listen to his quiet worries, and offer him the only peace he had known in a decade.

One afternoon, while Mia was taking a nap, Willow was walking through the estate's glass greenhouse when she overheard Marcus speaking urgently to Josiah near the entrance.

“Boss, Valenti knows about the girl,” Marcus whispered nervously. “They know Mia is your ultimate weakness. They’ve hired mercenary units. If they can’t break your front line, they will strike at the estate directly.”

Willow’s heart dropped into her stomach. She ducked behind a tall palm plant, listening intently.

“If anyone touches my daughter,” Josiah’s voice was dark enough to curdle blood, “I will burn the Valenti line to the ash. Increase security at the north perimeter. Move Willow and Mia to the subterranean safe room if the alarms sound even once.”

“And what about Miss Vance?” Marcus asked. “She’s a civilian, sir. She doesn't belong in a war zone. If things get ugly, she could be caught in the crossfire.”

There was a long pause. When Josiah spoke again, his voice trembled with a rare, raw emotion that chilled Willow to her core.

“Willow Vance is the heart of this house now,” Josiah said quietly, every word weighted with absolute conviction. “I would burn the entire world to the ground before I allowed a single hair on her head to be harmed. Protect her with your life, Marcus. If I die, see to it that she and Mia are taken to the safe house in Switzerland. She gets everything I own.”

Willow pressed her hand over her mouth to suppress a gasp. Tears pricked her eyes. He wasn't just protecting his daughter anymore; he was protecting her. He loved her.

That night, as heavy rain lashed against the estate windows once more, the inevitable happened.

At 2:00 AM, the estate's perimeter alarms shrieked through the night air. Gunfire erupted near the outer gates. High-caliber rounds shattered glass in the distant grand hall. Red emergency lights blared throughout the corridors, turning the luxurious mansion into a chaotic nightmare.

Willow bolted out of bed, running straight to Mia’s room. She grabbed the terrified, crying girl into her arms. “It’s okay, Mia! I’m here! I’ve got you!”

Before they could reach the door, the bedroom lock shattered with a deafening bang. Two armed mercenaries in black tactical gear burst inside, weapons raised.
