Chapter 5 - Unspoken Alliances

Weeks turned into months, and the transformation inside the Sterling estate was nothing short of miraculous. Mia’s violent outbursts began to fade, replaced by a growing curiosity and an intense devotion to Willow. Under Willow’s gentle guidance, Mia returned to her studies, began playing the piano again, and stopped viewing the mansion as a prison.
In turn, Willow became an indispensable presence in the estate. But it wasn't just Mia who was changing—it was Josiah.
The ruthless mafia lord found himself coming home earlier each evening. He cancelled night meetings just to sit at the long dining table and watch Willow encourage Mia to eat her vegetables. He found excuses to walk past the gardens when Willow and Mia were playing outside, taking rare moments to sit on the stone bench and simply listen to Willow talk.
One late rainy evening, while Mia was fast asleep, Willow sat in the cozy kitchen, sipping a cup of chamomile tea. The estate was quiet, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the glass.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway, and Josiah walked into the kitchen. He had removed his suit jacket, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the dark, rugged edge of a man who lived in the shadows. He looked tired, burdens weighing heavily on his broad shoulders.
“You’re still awake,” Josiah said quietly, pouring himself a glass of amber whiskey.
“I was reading,” Willow replied gently. “You look exhausted, Mr. Sterling.”
Josiah walked over to the kitchen island and leaned against it, taking a slow sip of his drink. His dark eyes fixed on her face. “Call me Josiah. You’ve saved my daughter's life, Willow. 'Mr. Sterling' feels far too distant.”
Willow flushed slightly, nodding. “Josiah.”
“I checked on Mia just now,” Josiah murmured, his tone softening. “She was sleeping peacefully. She didn't leave her nightlight on for the first time in a year. She told me earlier that you promised to teach her how to bake cinnamon rolls tomorrow.”
“She’s a brilliant little girl, Josiah,” Willow said, looking up at him. “She just needed to know that she wasn't alone in her grief. She needed her father to see her, not just protect her.”
Josiah looked down at his glass, a rare shadow of vulnerability passing over his sharp features. “I didn't know how to look at her without seeing her mother. Every time Mia screamed, every time she cried, it reminded me of what I lost... and how I failed to protect my family.”
Willow stood up, moving around the island until she was standing just a few feet away from him. Without thinking, driven by a deep instinct of compassion, she reached out and gently laid her soft hand over his large, cold fingers resting on the counter.
“You didn't fail her,” Willow whispered softly. “You brought her here. You protected her. You were just broken, too. But you don't have to carry the dark alone anymore.”
Josiah froze at the touch of her warm hand. Slowly, he turned his hand over, intertwining his long, powerful fingers with hers. The contrast between them was striking—her soft, delicate hand held securely within his large, hardened fist. He looked down into her deep hazel eyes, seeing a warmth and tenderness he hadn't experienced in years.
The air between them grew thick with an undeniable, electric tension. Josiah leaned in slightly, his gaze dropping to her lips. Willow’s heart hammered against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat as she realized how close he was. The dangerous mafia boss who commanded thousands was looking at her as if she were the only thing that mattered in the universe.
Before the moment could cross the threshold, a sudden sharp chime echoed from Josiah’s encrypted phone sitting on the counter.
The harsh red light flashed on the screen: URGENT: BORDER BREACH. VALENTI FAMILY MOVING IN.

The warmth in Josiah’s eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a terrifying, lethal coldness. He let go of Willow's hand, stepping back into his role as commander of the underworld.
“Go to your room, Willow,” Josiah commanded in a low, dangerous tone, grabbing his phone. “Lock the door. The shadows are coming back tonight.”
