Chapter 8 - The Price of Healing

Two years after the gala, Maya Vance stood in the pavilion of the Harvard Medical School graduation ceremony. At twenty-four, she was graduating at the top of her class, having completed an accelerated doctorate in pediatric neurology.

The crowd cheered as her name was called, but her eyes locked onto the front row. There sat her mother, weeping tears of joy, and her brother Sammy, who was now standing fully on his own two feet, wearing a university freshman blazer. Beside them sat Richard Harrison, looking like a proud uncle, and Ethan, who was watching her with an expression that went far beyond mere friendship.

Later that evening, an intimate celebration was held at the Brookline townhouse. The house was filled with the laughter of the two families who had become one in every way that mattered.

After dinner, Maya stepped out onto the back terrace, looking up at the clear summer stars. The cool night air felt refreshing against her skin. She heard the soft, familiar hum of a motorized mechanism behind her. She turned to see Ethan rolling out onto the terrace. He didn't use the heavy medical chair anymore; he used a sleek, lightweight titanium model that allowed him greater freedom.

"Dr. Vance," Ethan said, a brilliant smile lighting up his face. "It has a nice ring to it."

"Thank you, Ethan," Maya said, leaning against the balcony railing. "I wouldn't be standing here without your father. Without you."

"Hey," Ethan said softly, moving his chair closer to her. "You started all of this. You were the one who had the courage to breathe life back into me when the rest of the world thought I was already gone."

Maya looked down at him, her heart beating a little faster. Over the past few years, their relationship had quietly shifted. The childhood camaraderie had deepened into a profound, unbreakable love—a mutual understanding that they were two halves of the same miracle.

"Ethan, I’ve been offered a prestigious residency position," Maya said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

Ethan’s smile faltered slightly. "Where?"

"Right here in Boston. At the Harrison Pediatric Institute," she smiled warmly, watching relief wash over his face. "I'm going to head the new neural-regeneration department. We are going to find a way to help kids like you and Sammy walk without any limitations. That’s my dream."

Ethan reached up, taking her hand in his. His grip was firm and warm. "Then let me help you build that dream, Maya. I’ve been working on a project of my own. I’ve developed an advanced bio-synthetic interface—a software system that can translate neural signals into mechanical movement. I wanted to give it to you as a graduation present. For your research."

Maya looked at him, tears welling in her eyes. "You did that for my department?"

"I did it for us," Ethan said, his voice rich with emotion. "You gave me a future, Maya. Now, I want to spend the rest of my life building that future with you."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. When he opened it, a flawless diamond ring sparkled under the terrace lights. It was simple, elegant, and timeless.

"Maya Vance, will you marry me?"

May you like

Maya didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees, just as she had done seventeen years ago on the airport floor, bringing herself eye-level with the boy she had saved.

"Yes, Ethan," she whispered, pulling him into a deep, loving embrace. "A million times, yes."
