Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gala

The annual Harrison Global Shareholder Gala was held at the spectacular Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The elite of the business world gathered under the towering glass ceilings, surrounded by priceless art, champagne flowing freely from crystal fountains.

Richard Harrison stood at the podium, looking distinguished in a tailored tuxedo, though his hair was now streaked with silver. He looked out at the crowd, spotting Elena, Maya, and Ethan sitting at the front table. Sammy, now fourteen and walking with the aid of light leg braces, smiled proudly at his sister.

"Tonight, we do not just celebrate profit," Richard announced into the microphone, his voice echoing with authority. "We celebrate purpose. I am officially announcing the restructuring of Harrison Global. Moving forward, forty percent of all commercial technology profits will be permanently redirected to public healthcare infrastructure and pediatric research."

A murmur ran through the crowd of wealthy investors.

Suddenly, the massive digital screens behind Richard flickered. The elegant presentation slides vanished, replaced by bold, red headlines and leaked financial documents.

“HARRISON GLOBAL CHARITY FRAUD: THE VANCE FAMILY SCANDAM?”

Whispers erupted instantly. Photographers began flashing their cameras rapidly. Colin Dray, standing near the edge of the stage, feigned a look of absolute horror, though his eyes danced with triumph. He quickly stepped up to the podium, whispering loudly into Richard’s ear, "Sir, we need to cut the feed. The media is reporting that Elena Vance has been funneling money out of the foundation. The police are outside."

Victor Thorne stood up from his VIP table, projecting his voice across the room. "Is this where our investments are going, Richard? To fund the luxurious lifestyle of a family you plucked from the streets?"

Elena turned pale, clutching Maya’s hand. Maya stood up, her eyes blazing with anger, ready to defend her mother, but Ethan caught her arm.

"Wait," Ethan whispered, tapping a final sequence into his smartphone. "Let them dig their own grave."

Richard did not panic. He looked at the screen, then looked directly at Colin Dray. "Colin, did you authorize these documents to be displayed?"

"Of course not, sir! I am trying to protect you!" Colin lied smoothly.

"Good," Richard said, stepping back from the podium. "Because my son just informed me that the security override used to display these forged documents originated from your personal device less than ten minutes ago. And the data used to create them was transferred to Thorne Industries last night."

Before Colin could speak, Ethan connected his phone to the main projector. The forged documents vanished from the screen, replaced by a crystal-clear audio recording and video log. It was the footage from the restaurant the night before—captured by the restaurant's security system, which Ethan had legally accessed after tracing Colin’s digital footprint.

Colin’s voice boomed through the speakers: “If this leaks before the gala, Richard will be forced to step down, and I will be positioned to take over.”

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Victor Thorne’s face drained of color as he quietly tried to slip out the back exit, only to be blocked by two federal agents who had been alerted by Richard’s legal team an hour prior.

Two more officers walked up the stage stairs, approaching Colin Dray. The handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, definitive sound.

Colin looked at Richard, his face twisted in desperate rage. "I gave you fifteen years! And you chose them! A street family!"

Richard looked at his former assistant with pity. "They didn't ask for my empire, Colin. They saved my family. You tried to destroy it for a title."

As Colin was led away in disgrace, the crowd began to clap—a slow building crescendo that turned into a standing ovation. Richard looked down at Ethan and Maya, offering them a proud nod. The shadow that had hung over their future had been permanently erased.
