Chapter 6 - Growing Bonds and Hidden Shadows

Ten years passed with the swiftness of a summer breeze. The bond formed on the cold marble floor of Logan Airport did not wither; instead, it grew deeper with every passing season.
Maya and Ethan grew up side by side. Richard Harrison ensured they attended the same prestigious preparatory school in Boston, providing a specialized medical vehicle to transport them together each morning. To the rest of the world, they were an odd pairing—the daughter of a formerly destitute single mother and the sole heir to a multi-billion-dollar tech empire. But to each other, they were simply Maya and Ethan, two souls anchored by a moment of pure survival.
By the age of seventeen, Maya had blossomed into a fierce, brilliant young woman. The determination that had driven her to push through a crowd of adults at seven years old had transformed into an academic focus. She excelled in biology and chemistry, spending her summers volunteering at the Harrison Pediatric Institute, where her brother Sammy was now thriving under advanced gene-therapy treatments.
Ethan, too, had changed. Under his father's careful guidance and the best physical therapy money could buy, he had regained significant upper-body mobility. He was sharp, witty, and possessed a quiet emotional intelligence that balanced Maya’s fiery nature.
However, the rapid ascent of the Vance family did not sit well with everyone.
Colin Dray, Richard’s long-time personal assistant, stood in the dark corner of a high-end restaurant downtown, speaking in hushed tones to a rival tech executive named Victor Thorne. Colin had spent fifteen years serving Richard, expecting to be named a partner in Harrison Global. Instead, he watched Richard divert hundreds of millions of dollars into charitable foundations, medical research, and the personal trust funds of the Vance children.
"Richard has lost his edge, Victor," Colin whispered, sliding a flash drive across the table. "He’s obsessed with this girl and her family. He’s planning to announce a massive shift in company resources at the upcoming shareholder gala—turning Harrison Global into a non-profit medical research conglomerate. If he does that, our stock options become worthless."
Victor Thorne smiled coldly, pocketing the drive. "The shareholders won't allow it if they think Richard is mentally unfit or if there is a massive scandal surrounding the Vance girl. What’s on the drive?"
"Forged financial records," Colin whispered, a malicious glint in his eye. "It makes it look like Elena Vance has been embezzling money from the foundation, and that Maya is using Harrison Global funds for illegal medical trials. If this leaks before the gala, Richard will be forced to step down, and I will be positioned to take over."
Unbeknownst to Colin, the world they operated in was no longer just controlled by old men in boardrooms. Ethan Harrison had become an incredibly proficient software developer, having built a highly secure internal communication network for his father's company as a personal project.
The next afternoon, while sitting in the library of the Harrison estate, Ethan’s laptop pinged with a high-priority security alert. Someone had used an administrative override key to download sensitive financial logs from the foundation’s private server.
The override key belonged to Colin Dray.

Ethan stared at the screen, his face turning pale. He clicked on the tracking log and watched as the data was transferred to an external IP address associated with Thorne Industries—their fiercest competitor.
"Maya," Ethan said, his voice tense as she walked into the library carrying two mugs of tea. "We have a problem."
